Cadw  [ ˈka.du ] ( Welsh cadw 'preserve', 'preserve') is a government agency in Wales dedicated to the preservation of monuments . In addition to the protection and maintenance of historical buildings, monuments and landscapes, it also promotes the participation of local communities in their maintenance. As the Welsh counterpart to English Heritage , the agency is also responsible for the inclusion of Welsh buildings on the British list of monuments . Please click to listen!Play

Cadw was founded in 1984 as a subdivision of the Welsh Assembly Government and is now based in Nantgarw near Cardiff . It manages a total of 127 historical monuments, including 44 castles and palaces; Cadw owns the UNESCO World Heritage Sites Beaumaris Castle , Caernarfon Castle , Conwy Castle and Harlech Castle .
