location

Vale of Glamorgan is bordered to the northeast by Cardiff , to the north by Rhondda Cynon Taff , to the northwest by Bridgend and to the south by the Bristol Channel .

geography

The landscape of the rugged country on the south coast of Wales is more like typical English counties than the harsh areas of central and north Wales.

Settlements

Besides Barry, Penarth , Llantwit Major , Cowbridge and Dinas Powys are the largest towns.

history

Historically, the Vale of Glamorgan area was part of the county of Glamorganshire . During the administrative reform of 1974, the District Vale of Glamorgan was formed in the newly formed administrative county of South Glamorgan . On April 1, 1996, South Glamorgan was dissolved as an administrative unit and Vale of Glamorgan was converted into a Principal Area. The main town and center of administration is Barry.

traffic

The traffic-related fine development by means of public transport is carried out by regional and local bus routes. For long-distance travel to Cardiff, buses run by Cardiff Bus . The bus and train company First Cymru serves the larger towns with its overland lines in all directions (to West Wales and up to the north coast).

In addition to regional lines on the Vale of Glamorgan line, there are rail connections from London or Reading to Swansea and West Wales. These cross the County Borough Vale of Glamorgan between Cardiff and Swansea and stop in the larger towns.

The main road connections are the M4 and A48 motorways.

The only international airport in Wales, Cardiff International Airport, is in the Vale of Glamorgan area . A few kilometers to the west is another airfield, the MOD St Athan base, which is mainly used by the military .
