Glamorgan or Glamorganshire ( Welsh : Sir Morgannwg ) is one of the thirteen traditional counties and a former administrative county of Wales . In the Middle Ages , Glamorgan was a kingdom or principality. Glamorgan has the two largest Welsh cities, Cardiff and Swansea .

From 1974 to 1996, Glamorgan was divided into West Glamorgan (including Swansea), Mid Glamorgan, and South Glamorgan (including Cardiff). Today Glamorgan is divided into several unitary authorities for administrative purposes.

Glamorgan was originally an independent kingdom called Morgannwg , named after King Morgan, its founder. It was later united with the neighboring kingdoms of Gwent and Ergyng . Because of its location, Glamorgan was the second area in Wales to be conquered by the Normans after Gwent and was also the scene of clashes between the Marcher Lords and the Welsh princes.
