history

Viking Star in London

On December 21, 2011, Viking Ocean Cruises and STX France signed a preliminary contract for the construction of two cruise ships. However, the preliminary contract was terminated due to financing problems on the part of the shipyard. On April 18, 2012, Viking Ocean Cruises and Fincantieri signed a preliminary contract for the construction of two ships. On July 12, 2012, the preliminary contract was finally converted into a firm order; delivery was scheduled for 2015 and 2016. On December 4, 2012, the shipping company ordered two more ships for delivery in 2016 and 2017, and two more ships were also optioned. On March 28, 2015, Viking Ocean Cruises took over the first ship with the Viking Star . The ships will only have balcony cabins. The completion of Viking Sky has been postponed to 2017 instead of June 2016 due to construction delays. The eight month delay is due to delays in the construction of Holland-America Line's Koningsdam . On March 24, 2016, Viking Ocean Cruises took over the second ship with the Viking Sea .

In November 2015, two more ships were ordered for delivery in mid-2018 and late 2020. In April 2017, two more ships with delivery in 2021 and 2022 were ordered under reserve. There are also options for two more ships. The ships with delivery in 2021 and 2022 were firmly ordered in December 2017. The optioned ships are to be delivered in 2022 and 2023.

The Viking Sun was taken over on September 25, 2017 and christened on March 8, 2018 in Shanghai .

In March 2018, an agreement was signed for six more ships with delivery between 2024 and 2027. This would increase the fleet to 16 ships.

In April 2018, a preliminary contract for two ships and two options was signed with VARD . The ships were ordered in July 2018.
