STX Europe was an international shipbuilding group of 16 shipyards in Brazil, Finland, France, Norway, Romania and Vietnam with around 16,000 employees (end of 2008).

From 2012 the company was sold. The last shipyard, STX France in Saint-Nazaire, was sold 50% to Fincantieri in 2018 , the remaining shares are owned by the French state, the Naval Group , the shipyard workforce and local suppliers.

history

In February 2002 the shipbuilding activities of the Norwegian groups Aker ASA and Kværner were bundled under the management company Aker Kværner Yards AS in Oslo. In 2004 the Aker Yards ASA shipbuilding group was created under new ownership and was then listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange.

In June 2006, the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard (Saint-Nazaire) of the Alstom group was taken over. In March 2007 Aker Yards became self-employed. The 40.1% stake previously held by Aker ASA in Aker Yards was sold and became a free float .

In October 2007, the South Korean shipyard group STX Shipbuilding bought 39.2% of the shares in Aker Yards. The shipbuilding company was listed under the name Aker Yards ASA in the OBX Index on the Oslo Stock Exchange from 2004 to 2009 .

In November 2008 Aker Yards changed its name to STX Europe . The turnover in 2008 was 31.5 billion Norwegian kroner . As of December 31, 2008, STX controlled 93.87% of the shares in STX Europe and acquired sole ownership in 2009. On February 11, 2009, STX Europe was delisted from the Oslo Stock Exchange .

Until July 12, 2009, STX Europe held a minority stake of 30% in the shipbuilding group Wadan Yards, which was formed in 2008 .

Due to high losses (490.9 billion KRW ) of the parent company STX, all shipyards of STX Europe were sold to other companies from 2012 to 2018.

overview

STX Europe was divided into three main business areas:

  • Cruise Ships & Ferries (STX France) and (STX Finland),
  • Offshore & special ships (STX OSV) as well
  • Other (STX Norway).

The former commercial shipbuilding division was spun off from the group in 2008. Cruise ships were built by STX France in Saint-Nazaire and STX Finland in Turku .

Sale of the shipyards

In January 2013, STX OSV were sold to Fincantieri . The new owner brought these ten shipyards together in his Norwegian subsidiary VARD AS , based in Ålesund , replacing STX as the fourth largest shipbuilding company in the world. Also in 2013, the STX Norway shipyard in Florø was sold to the Westcon Group.

The Finnish shipyard in Rauma was closed. In 2014 STX Finland was sold to Meyer Werft GmbH & Co. KG in Papenburg . This continues to build cruise ships in Turku as Meyer Turku Oy . The shipyard in Helsinki has been operating under the name Arctech Helsinki Shipyard Oy since 2011 . The goal is to keep icebreaker technology in the country. STX Europe sold 100% of the shares to the Russian partner OSK by 2015 .

In May 2016 the sale of the shipyard in Lanester with 145 employees to Kership was announced in autumn 2016 . The acquisition was completed on October 8, 2016. The last shipyard to be sold was STX France in Saint-Nazaire , and both CMN in Cherbourg and Fincantieri were interested in a takeover . The contract was awarded to the company Fincantieri, which now holds 50% of the shares in the shipyard itself and 1% of the shares were loaned by the French state to take over operational control.

Wadan yards

In Germany, Aker MTW in Wismar belonged from 1998 to 2008 and from 2002 the Warnowwerft (previously under the name Kvaerner Warnow Werft GmbH) in Rostock - Warnemünde (from mid-2003 Aker Warnow Werft GmbH, from spring 2004 Aker Warnemünde Operations GmbH and Aker Warnemünde Real Estate GmbH ) to the group. From 2003 the shipyards operated under the common umbrella brand "Aker Ostsee", since 2005 under the name "Aker Yards Germany".

In March 2008 Aker Yards sold the majority of the two German shipyards and the shipyard in Mykolaiv, Ukraine, to the Russian investment company FLC West . The three shipyards and three engineering offices became part of the new joint venture Aker Yards Ukraine Holding , in which FLC West owned 70% and Aker Yards 30% of the shares. The transaction came into effect retrospectively on January 1, 2008 and from September 22, 2008 the shipyards operated as Wadan Yards .

On July 12, 2009, STX Europe announced that it had sold the minority stake of 30% in Wadan Yards Group AS to the Luxembourg-based Mandataria Finance SA . At the same time, open points were clarified with FLC West Sarl .
