The Europa 2 is a cruise ship operated by the Hapag-Lloyd Kreuzfahrten shipping company . It was built by STX France (previously Chantiers de l'Atlantique ) in Saint-Nazaire since September 2011 and delivered to the client at the end of April 2013. Since then it has been used by the shipping company for cruises in various shipping areas.

history

Construction and commissioning

In December 2010, Hapag-Lloyd Kreuzfahrten commissioned the French shipyard STX France in Saint-Nazaire to build a new cruise ship that was to be put into service in 2013 as Europa 2 . The interior was designed by the German ship architects PSD.

Construction began with the first steel cut on September 5, 2011 and the keel was laid on February 7, 2012 by lowering the first module in the dry dock . After fourteen additional modules, the new building left the construction dock on July 6, 2012 and has since been further completed at the equipment quay. After the successful shipyard test runs, the Europa 2 was handed over to Hapag-Lloyd on April 26, 2013. On May 10, 2013, the ship was christened in Hamburg during the 824th  birthday of the port by Dana Schweiger, ex-wife of the actor Til Schweiger .

commitment

The Europa 2 left for her maiden voyage on May 11, 2013 , from Hamburg to Barcelona . The ship is now used for worldwide cruises. Since the Europa 2 as used also by Hapag-Lloyd Cruises Europe is relatively small compared to other cruise ships, it can also drive destinations that are off the traditional routes (eg. As the Amazon region ).

At the beginning of 2015, TUI bought the ship from the previous owner Otto Mihm for 278 million euros in order to save the charter rates.

Cabins and on-board facilities

Europa 2 swimming pool

The 251 cabins on the Europa 2 are exclusively suites with separate living and sleeping areas, two of which are handicapped-accessible. They are divided into thirteen price categories. Depending on the size, location and furnishings, a distinction is made between “Family Apartment”, “Veranda Suite”, “Ocean Suite”, “Grand Suite”, “SPA Suite”, “Grand Penthouse Suite” and “Owner Suite”. The cabins have internet access and each passenger receives his or her own email address during the cruise .

The public areas of the ship are primarily on deck 4. From the seven-story atrium amidships, two panoramic elevators take you to the upper decks. In the front area of deck 4 is the “theater”, which is used both as a show stage and a concert hall. The seven restaurants on Europa 2 are spread across the entire ship. The wellness area is on deck 5. The ship's main pool is on deck 9. The pool can be covered and then used as a stage. In the front area there is the “Belvedere”, the library , an auditorium / 3D cinema for lectures and film screenings, a gallery and a cooking school. The “Yacht Club” is located in the rear area of Deck 9. The Sansibar, in cooperation with the restaurant of the same name on the island of Sylt , is located on deck 8.

The Europa 2's equipment also includes twelve rigid inflatable boats (so-called “Zodiacs”), which are used for landings and special excursions .

Machine system and drive

The Europa 2 is equipped with a diesel-electric machine system. Four in-line diesel engines (six-cylinder, four-stroke diesel engines) from MaK drive generators that develop a total of 18,000 kW of electrical power. They supply the entire ship with electrical energy. The power generation is controlled depending on the load, the motor-generator units are switched on or off depending on the energy requirement. In order to guarantee operational safety, the machine system is technically and spatially divided into two independent groups. The operation of the machine and propulsion system is fully automated and monitored from the control room on deck 3.

The ship was equipped with two propeller gondolas of the type Rolls-Royce - Converteam "Mermaid" hanging under the hull . In each nacelle there is an electric motor that drives a 5-blade fixed propeller with a diameter of 4.60 m. The propellers are aligned forwards in the direction of travel (pull propeller) and rotate at up to 155 rpm. As the gondolas can be rotated 360 °, the electric motors are supplied with power via slip rings .

As a maneuvering aid in ports and at low speeds, two cross-thrust control systems with an output of 1500 kW each are installed in the bow of the ship . In order to reduce rolling movements in rough seas, the Europa 2 has a pair of fin stabilizers, each with an area of 14 m², manufactured by Blohm + Voss .

The drinking water treatment on board takes place via two steam generators and a reverse osmosis system.

environment

The Europa 2 is the first cruise ship on which an SCR catalytic converter works. This should render 75 percent of the sulfur in the exhaust gases harmless and reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by almost 95 percent.
