Hapag-Lloyd Kreuzfahrten GmbH is a cruise company based in Hamburg and a fleet of five ships. The company has specialized in the two market segments of expedition cruises and yacht cruises. The company has been using the brand name "Hapag-Lloyd Cruises" for its market presence since 2016. The company has been a 50:50 company of TUI AG and Royal Caribbean Group since the beginning of 2020 . Exclusive private jet cruises are also organized.

History and Development

Hapag-Lloyd Kreuzfahrten originally belonged to the Hapag-Lloyd Group. Its predecessor company, HAPAG, undertook the first so-called “educational and pleasure trip” on the ship Augusta Victoria in 1891 on the initiative of the then general manager, Albert Ballin . He wanted to improve the utilization in the demand - weaker winter time. The interest was great and cruise shipping was born. The year 1891 is therefore part of the company's logo today.

While retaining the name Hapag-Lloyd, the business area was made legally independent and 100% sold to TUI in 2008. In February 2020, TUI sold half of the shares, and the company has been a 50:50 joint venture with Royal Caribbean since then . The aim of the cooperation is greater internationalization when addressing new customers. For this reason, the cruises have been offered under the “Hapag-Lloyd Cruises” brand and no longer as cruises since 2016. The company is traditionally geared towards the German-speaking market. The language on board is German and partly also English. The company's offer is positioned in the two segments of luxury and expedition cruises.

The Europe

In the tourism years 2006/07, Hapag-Lloyd achieved a market share of approx. 12.1% in terms of sales in the German market and approx. 12.4% in 2007/08 and was therefore in third place after AIDA in both tourism years Cruises and Phoenix Reisen . In 2008, the company generated sales of EUR 200 million, which is an increase of 35.4% compared to 2005. The EBITA , earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, increased during the same period by 245% to 13.8 million euros in 2008. In fiscal year 2019 was generated by 305 million euros, sales, EBITA was 43 million . Euro.

CO 2 compensation

Hapag-Lloyd Cruises is working so far the only cruise operators with atmosfair together to create a CO 2 offer offsetting for lake passage. Hapag-Lloyd Kreuzfahrten pays a quarter of the guests' voluntary compensation payments in order to support a project for power supply through solar lamps in India. A climate calculator determines the CO 2 share and the corresponding compensation payment depending on the duration of the journey and the passenger's cabin category.

Species protection

Since, according to the German Whale and Dolphin Conservation Forum (WDSF), a law was passed on the Faroe Islands in June 2015 that obliges locals and tourists to report any sighting of marine mammals to the islands' authorities within the twelve-mile zone report and this information can be used to start driven hunts for pilot whales and other dolphin species, Hapag-Lloyd Kreuzfahrten has canceled its landings on the Faroe Islands until further notice.

At the end of July 2018, there was a controversy with animal rights activists after an employee ("polar bear guard") of the Bremen cruise ship shot a polar bear after a crew member had been attacked by it.

Cruise flight

In addition to cruises, Hapag-Lloyd has also been offering 10 to 20-day cruises since 2009. These trips complement the cruise program, as destinations that are inland can also be visited.

From winter 2008/2009, the flights were carried out with its own Boeing 737-800 , registered as D-AHLK with TUIfly . This aircraft was painted in the company colors blue / orange with the inscription "Hapag Lloyd - Kreuzfahrten" and was named Albert Ballin . Max. 52 passengers. As of May 2010, flew D-AHLK in wetlease for German Wings and TUIfly in use today. As of January 2011 , the cruise flights will be carried out with an Airbus A319CJ with the registration number CS-TFU , which is also called Albert Ballin again and offers a maximum of 44 passengers.
