history

In 1974 the Swabian chef Herbert Seckler moved to Sylt at the age of 22. First he found work in gastronomy in Westerland and then bought a kiosk that was on the nudist beach between Rantum and Hörnum. There he sold home cooking , sausages, and french fries . The snack bar was called "Zanzibar". Outside the season, Seckler worked on butter ships in order not to get into financial difficulties. After the then little-known beach restaurant Sansibar burned down in 1982, Seckler decided to build a larger Zanzibar. In 2009 Herbert Seckler was named “Restaurateur of the Year” by the gastronomy critic Gault-Millau , and the Sansibar was awarded 13 points.

Surname

The company's name is derived from the stretch of beach on which the beach restaurant is located. From around the 1930s, three of the nudist beaches on the island of Sylt had exotic names. The beach at Wenningstedt was called "Abyssinia" and the two nudist beaches south of Rantum were called "Samoa" and "Zanzibar".

Zanzibar in other cities

The first mainland branch of Sylter Sansibar is located in Düsseldorf's Kö-Bogen . The restaurant with lounge area has an area of 400 square meters and is an in-shop model in the Breuninger fashion house.

In 2017, a Sansibar branch opened in Stuttgart in the Dorotheen Quartier, part of the Stuttgart fashion company Breuninger .

There has also been a branch on Mallorca since 2012, Port Adriano, under the name Sansibar Wine.

Since 2007, Sansibar has been the namesake for menus that were available from Air Berlin on board all short and medium-haul flights of 90 minutes or more. The cooperation was intensified from summer 2013. Air Berlin discontinued flight operations in 2017 after bankruptcy.

There are other branches, for example, in the AEZ in Hamburg .

Sponsorship

As of the 2014/15 season, Sylter Sansibar will be the main sponsor of FC Würzburger Kickers in the Bavarian regional league - initially for one season . The sponsorship of the ambitious club, which wanted to achieve promotion to the 3rd division in three years , and which succeeded in just one year, is the first of its kind for the company. Würzburg's trainer and ex-professional Bernd Hollerbach brokered the contact between the club and Sansibar and was able to inspire the company management for the project .

Since the 2015/16 season, Sansibar has been a sponsor of the handball Bundesliga team THW Kiel .
