Career
As a player
Hollerbach began his career at ASV Rimpar . From 1988 he played for the Würzburger Kickers , with whom he made promotion to the Bayern League in 1990 . There he recommended himself with good performances and switched to FC St. Pauli in the Bundesliga during the winter break . There he could not prevent relegation and then played for four years in the 2nd Bundesliga . In the 1994/95 season he made promotion to the Bundesliga with FC St. Pauli, but moved to 1. FC Kaiserslautern . He stayed there for only half a year and then moved to Hamburger SV . With HSV he played in the Bundesliga until 2004 and won the league cup in 2003.
Hollerbach was known as a tough left-back ("Holleraxt") who got over ten yellow cards almost every season . In total, he received 98 yellow and three red cards during his Bundesliga times . Only Stefan Effenberg received more warnings, but with significantly more stakes.
As a trainer
Beginnings in Hamburg and Lübeck
After eight years at HSV, the trained butcher took on a coaching job at VfL 93 Hamburg in 2005 . On July 1, 2006 he was coach of VfB Lübeck in the Regionalliga Nord . After two defeats in a row, which challenged the Hanseatic city's ambitions for promotion, he was released on February 28, 2007.
Co-trainer under Felix Magath
In June 2007 he was hired by the German first division club VfL Wolfsburg as assistant coach alongside Felix Magath . In July 2008 he also took over the second team in the Regionalliga Nord . Lorenz-Günther Köstner took over the second team for the second half of the season. At the end of the 2008/09 season, Hollerbach was German champion as assistant coach of VfL Wolfsburg.
For the 2009/10 season, Hollerbach joined Felix Magath as assistant coach at FC Schalke 04 , where he worked until March 2011. After Felix Magath's dismissal on March 16, 2011, Hollerbach and his coaching colleague Werner Leuthard dissolved his contract with FC Schalke 04 one day later and then switched back to VfL Wolfsburg on March 18, 2011 with Felix Magath and Werner Leuthard . On October 25, 2012, Hollerbach left the club at his own request after Magath was dismissed.
Würzburger Kickers
From the 2014/15 season Hollerbach trained as head coach for his home club Würzburger Kickers . On May 31, 2015 he and his team made it to the third division in the relegation against 1. FC Saarbrücken . A year later, on May 24, 2016, Hollerbach succeeded in being promoted to the second division again in the relegation against MSV Duisburg . After the direct relegation of the Würzburger Kickers, Hollerbach resigned as head coach on May 22, 2017. Stephan Schmidt was his successor .
Hamburger SV
On January 22, 2018, Hollerbach took over the Bundesliga team of Hamburger SV, which was in 17th place in the table after the 19th matchday of the 2017/18 season with 15 points, as the successor to Markus Gisdol . He signed a contract until June 30, 2019. After Hollerbach had not won any of his last 17 games with the Würzburger Kickers, he also won none of his seven games with Hamburger SV (three draws, four defeats) and set a new record in German professional football. On March 12, 2018, seven weeks after his introduction, Hollerbach was released when HSV was still in 17th place in the table eight game days before the end of the season, seven points behind the relegation place. He was succeeded by the previous U21 coach Christian Titz . A few days earlier, on March 8, 2018, HSV had already parted ways with CEO Heribert Bruchhagen and director of professional football Jens Todt . At the end of the season, HSV was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga for the first time in its history .
Royal Excel Mouscron
For the 2019/20 season , Hollerbach took over the Belgian first division club Royal Excel Mouscron as the successor to Bernd Storck . He received a contract with a term until June 30, 2021. Due to illness, he was canceled from the end of January 2020. The club commissioned the previous head of the training center, Philippe Saint-Jean , to initially represent until the end of the main round in the 2019/20 season. However, Hollerbach resumed its activities on February 25, 2020. Mouscron ended the season that had been canceled after 29 match days due to the COVID-19 pandemic under the German in 10th place in the table.
Royal Excel only received the license for the 2020/21 season after the Belgian court of arbitration for sport was involved. The budget presented there contained savings in expenses, which would also have meant a reduction in the trainer's salary. On June 10, 2020, the club and coach agreed to terminate the one-year contract.
