Lorenz-Günther Köstner (born January 30, 1952 in Wallenfels ) is a former German football player and today's coach .
Career as a player
As a midfielder, Köstner played 91 first division and 86 second division games for Borussia Mönchengladbach , Bayer 05 Uerdingen and Arminia Bielefeld . With Mönchengladbach he won the German championship and the UEFA Cup in 1975.
Career as a coach
His coaching career began at FC Bayern Hof in the 1981/82 season.
He worked for SSV Reutlingen 05 in the 1986/87 and 1987/88 seasons before becoming a coach at professional clubs. From July 1 to August 26, 1989, SC Freiburg trained very briefly , and a month later KSV Hessen Kassel (September 13, 1989 until the end of the season). From July 1, 1990 to June 30, 1993 he worked as an assistant coach under Christoph Daum at VfB Stuttgart , with whom he became German champion in 1992. Then he trained the Stuttgart Kickers .
At SpVgg Unterhaching he was coach for a total of six years from the 1994/95 season with one interruption ( 1. FC Cologne from October 1, 1997 to June 30, 1998). Köstner had led the Munich suburb club into the Bundesliga in 1999 and reached tenth place in the table in the following season. He was released on September 13, 2001 after Unterhaching was relegated from the 1st Bundesliga.
From October 1, 2002, he coached the then second division club Karlsruher SC . Despite a contract valid until summer 2006, he was given leave of absence on December 20, 2004. In the summer of 2005, a commitment by the then regional league club VfR Aalen failed despite an agreement with the club, because the Karlsruhe SC Köstner refused to release. On December 24, 2005 he succeeded Hansi Flick as trainer of TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in the regional league. After a less than successful season, he resigned in the spring of 2006. Ralf Rangnick was his successor .
On November 17, 2006, Köstner became the new head coach at the second division Rot-Weiss Essen . One day after a 3-0 defeat at Revier rivals MSV Duisburg , the club decided on May 21, 2007 not to extend Köstner's contract after Essen's direct relegation.
For the second half of the 2008/09 season, Köstner succeeded Bernd Hollerbach as coach of the second team at VfL Wolfsburg . His contract ran until the end of the 2009/10 season. On January 25, 2010, after Armin Veh was released from work, Köstner took on the duties of head coach of the first team at VfL Wolfsburg until the end of the season. With the beginning of the 2010/11 season, Köstner resumed his work as coach of the second team at VfL Wolfsburg.
In October 2012, Köstner was again coach of the first team at VfL Wolfsburg after Felix Magath had been released from his duties. At that time, VfL was bottom of the Bundesliga table with five points. From January 2013, Köstner took over the club's U-23 team again after Dieter Hecking was signed as the new head coach.
After Köstner initially no longer exercised a trainer function after July 1, 2013, Fortuna Düsseldorf hired him in December of the same year as the successor to Mike Büskens and interim coach Oliver Reck with a contract term until June 30, 2015. Since Köstner was on sick leave from April 2014 , Köstner and the association agreed on an early termination of the contract after 72 sick days. Köstner has been healthy again since the end of August 2014.
