Klaus Toppmöller (born August 12, 1951 in Rivenich ) is a former German football player and coach .

Career as a player

Toppmöller is the son of an innkeeper and a trained engineer for supply technology. He started his football career at SV Rivenich and then went to the then regional league team Eintracht Trier , for whom he scored 33 goals in two years. He then played in the Bundesliga from 1972 to 1980 204 times for 1. FC Kaiserslautern and scored 108 goals. The striker is FCK's record scorer to this day.

In 1976 (against Spain ) and 1979 (against Malta and Turkey ) Toppmöller played three times in the German national soccer team . In his international debut on May 22, 1976 in Munich in the European Championship qualifier against Spain, he scored his first and only international goal in a 2-0 win.

In 1980 Toppmöller moved to Dallas Tornado in the North American Soccer League and after one season (31 league appearances and seven goals) to the Calgary Boomers , before ending his playing career at FSV Salmrohr in the Second Bundesliga after 31 appearances in the 1986/87 season. He had previously scored 114 hits in the then amateur Oberliga Südwest for the Salmtaler in the seasons 1981/82 to 1985/86.

Career as a trainer and manager

While he was still active, Toppmöller became the manager of FSV Salmrohr . In March 1987 he took over the coaching position of the second division side from Robert Jung and acted as player coach . However, he could not prevent the club's relegation. Until April 18, 1988 he was a trainer in Salmrohr. Further engagements followed at SSV Ulm 1846 (April 19, 1988 to February 1989) and Wismut Aue (November 28, 1990 to June 30, 1991).

His first position in the 2nd Bundesliga was SV Waldhof Mannheim (September 19, 1991 to June 30, 1993). On July 1, 1993, Toppmöller took over Eintracht Frankfurt , with whom he had a sensationally successful start to the season and won the autumn championship. In addition, Jay-Jay Okocha scored the goal of 1993 in his first Bundesliga appearance under Toppmöller . After the team's subsequent failures and the resulting missed championship, he was dismissed on April 10, 1994 at Frankfurt. From November 9, 1994 to June 30, 1999, he coached VfL Bochum , with whom he advanced to the round of 16 of the UEFA Cup in the 1997/98 season , where they even led 2-0 in the first leg at Ajax Amsterdam , but lost 2: 4 in the end and didn't get past 2: 2 at home either.

The next coaching station was 1. FC Saarbrücken , with whom he was promoted to the 2. Bundesliga in 2000 . On November 29, 2000, after an 8-2 defeat, Toppmöller was dismissed. Before that, a move to 1. FC Kaiserslautern , who was looking for a successor to the dismissed Otto Rehhagel , failed. Toppmöller was disappointed because the FCS, contrary to previous agreements, only wanted to let him go for a high transfer fee. As a result, critics accused him of no longer working with full commitment for the FCS. He was only in contact with Bayer 04 Leverkusen shortly before his release . However, this change also failed due to the transfer modalities.

On July 1, 2001, he finally became head coach at Bayer 04 Leverkusen , which he led to the final of the Champions League in 2002, as well as second place in the Bundesliga and the German Cup final . At that time Toppmöller let his team play unconditional attack football in the "one touch" style . As a result, Toppmöller was named Trainer of the Year by German sports journalists in 2002 as the first ever coach . When Leverkusen was in acute danger of relegation the following season, in the wake of the sale of Michael Ballack and Zé Roberto as well as a fatal injury misery, which in some cases caused the loss of seven defensive players, Toppmöller was dismissed on February 16, 2003. From October 23, 2003 to October 17, 2004 he was Kurt Jara's successor as coach at Hamburger SV and coached the team in 33 Bundesliga games. At HSV, Toppmöller was dismissed when the club was bottom of the table. One of the reasons was the elimination in the cup competition against the lower class Paderborn: The game had been manipulated by referee Robert Hoyzer , which was only to become apparent in the course of the clarification of the betting scandal in 2005 . Therefore, in a later interview, Toppmöller made the manipulated game jointly responsible for his dismissal.

On February 1, 2006, Klaus Toppmöller took over the position of national coach in Georgia . He hired Ralf Minge as an assistant coach . It was Toppmöller's first position abroad, although he had been courted by many European clubs after his success with Leverkusen in the 2002 Champions League.
On April 2, 2008, his contract with the Georgian Football Association was prematurely terminated. The resignation was justified with "extremely mediocre results", as association president Nodar Achalkazi announced. The team had only three wins in the European Championship qualification - two of them against the pointless group bottom - and one draw against eight defeats and thus fell short of expectations as the group penultimate. Immediately before Toppmöller's dismissal, however, there had also been disputes regarding his contract. In this context, Toppmöller emphasized that it was still motivated and wanted to lead the team to the 2010 World Cup .

From November 6th to December 20th, 2007 Toppmöller was a member of the supervisory board of the second division soccer club 1. FC Kaiserslautern . There he had sole, but honorary, responsibility in the sporting field and was supposed to help the traditional club, which was in crisis and threatened with relegation, to keep the class. After six weeks, however, he resigned for personal reasons.

Since then, Toppmöller has not held a position in football. He was in discussions with several associations as national coach ( Czech Republic , Ghana , Nigeria , Cameroon ) as well as club coach at 1. FC Cologne and at 1860 Munich , but in no case did he get involved.

Klaus Toppmöller is the first coach in the Bundesliga to lead a team to second place in both international and national cup competitions and the league in one season. This “vice triple” was only achieved again ten years later by FC Bayern Munich under Jupp Heynckes . Thanks to these results under Toppmöller, Bayer Leverkusen is still the only German team, together with FC Bayern Munich, to achieve one of the first two places in all three competitions (international competition, DFB Cup and championship) within one season.

family

Klaus Toppmöller has been married to Rosi Toppmöller since 1977 and has three children. His daughter Sarah-Nina Toppmöller (* 1979) is now active as a singer under the pseudonym ZaraNina after graduating from high school and doing a bank apprenticeship . His two sons Dino Toppmöller (* 1980, named after the Italian goalkeeper idol Dino Zoff ) and Tommy Toppmöller (* 1988) are, like their father, active in football. Dino, who played under his father at 1. FC Saarbrücken in 1999/2000 and was the only professional in the Toppmöller family who never played at 1. FC Kaiserslautern , is currently the head coach of Luxembourg national champions F91 Dudelange .

Klaus Toppmöller's brother Heinz (* 1950) played together with his better-known brother at 1. FC Kaiserslautern in the 1974/75 season. He moved to Georgia in 2006 and was coach of the U19 national team there.

Klaus Toppmöller's nephew Marco Toppmöller (* 1978), the son of Heinz Toppmöller, also played for 1. FC Kaiserslautern in a Bundesliga season (2000/01). After he intermittently u. a., just like Dino Toppmöller, who was under contract in Luxembourg (with Victoria Rosport ), he ended his active, full-time football career in the summer of 2010, but occasionally still plays in the district league at SV Leiwen-Köwerich . Marco Toppmöller's brother Timo (* 1981), another nephew of Klaus Toppmöller, also plays for the latter club.
