Helmut Sadlowski
Helmut Sadlowski (born March 18, 1929 in Duisburg ; † December 12, 2007 ) was a German football player .
Career
In his youth, the Duisburg-born player played for Union 02 and Gelb-Weiß Hamborn , then one season for SV Arminia Hannover and then in the 1952/53 season for Hamborn 07 . In 1953 he moved to the then top division club FC Schalke 04 . In the first season for his new club, the center forward scored nine goals in 14 games. His “daring style of play” earned him the nickname “Catcher”. He experienced his first career high point in 1955 when he reached the DFB Cup final against Karlsruher SC with Schalke . The two goals that Sadlowski this in Braunschweig discharged final scoring, however, could not prevent his team with 2 the game: lost third
The following year, Schalke reached the group games for the German championship as second in the league . Again against Karlsruher SC, the team needed at least one draw to reach a pure west final against Borussia Dortmund . Thanks to two goals from Hans Krämer and Otto Laszig , things looked good for the Royal Blues until half time, before KSC scored the 3-2 winner just before the end and moved into the final due to the better goal quotient .
The then Schalke trainer Edi Frühwirth trained Sadlowski more and more as a defender over the years. When Schalke reached the final of the German championship against Hamburger SV in 1958, he eliminated the then already very successful striker Uwe Seeler together with Günter Brocker and Otto Laszig . The team around Berni Klodt and Manfred Kreuz won the final in Hanover 3-0. In the young Schalke team with an average age of only 22.5 years, Sadlowski was one of the few veterans at that time.
In the European Cup he scored a goal against Copenhagen BK in the first round in September , but shortly afterwards Sadlowski broke his metatarsus and was unable to play for months. After 138 competitive games and 37 goals, he left Schalke in the summer of 1959 and played another season in the Oberliga West for Rot-Weiß Oberhausen (three goals in seven games). Then the trained lathe operator and father of three began to work in the Gutehoffnungshütte .
Sadlowski occasionally played for the traditional team of FC Schalke 04 and followed the home games of the Bundesliga club. He last lived in Sterkrade . On December 12, 2007, at the age of 78, he died of a cerebral haemorrhage .
