Laszig was trained in the youth teams of FC Schalke 04 and played for the first eleven of the miners at the age of 18, which was then coached by Fritz Szepan . His teammate Willi Koslowski described him as "one of the greatest talents of that time". Laszig, who is considered to be introverted, was mainly used in the runner row, both on the right side and in the central position. In the 1955/56 season he was part of the team that was able to win the runner-up in the Oberliga West and thus moved into the finals. There he played all seven games for Schalke as a half-forward. In 1958 he and his team reached the final of the German championship against Hamburger SV , which Schalke won 3-0. The fact that the Hamburg international Uwe Seeler , who was already very successful at the time, failed to score was not least thanks to the physically robust Laszig, who was used as a stopper in this game. He played a total of 162 competitive games for Schalke 04 and scored 47 goals.

For the DFB he played on March 24, 1954 in Gelsenkirchen in the international match against England as a left connector in a B international match. On December 21, 1957, he held the central stopper role in the U23 national team at the international match against Hungary in Braunschweig, where his teammates Willi Koslowski and Willi Soya scored the three goals to 3: 3. Helmut Laszig's older brother played two games in the 1958/59 European Cup against KB Copenhagen and Atlético Madrid . Two meniscus operations contributed to the fact that Otto Laszig could not live up to all the advance praise.

Hannover 96, 1962 to 1969

In 1962 Laszig moved to Hannover 96 , where he was in the team that made promotion to the Bundesliga in 1964 under Helmut "Fiffi" Kronsbein . In the promotion round he played all six games against Hessen Kassel , Alemannia Aachen and FK Pirmasens . In the first year after returning to the upper house of German football, the Lower Saxony managed a surprising fifth place. In the trade fair cup of the following 1965/66 season, Hanover initially eliminated FC Porto . In the round of 16 Laszig played three times (return leg and a playoff) against the eventual winner FC Barcelona . Only a coin toss in favor of the Catalans prevented progress to the next round - one of the bitterest moments in the career of the technically skilled player.

After 118 Bundesliga games and three goals, Otto Laszig ended his active career as a player in 1969.

Coaching stations

After his career as a player, Laszig was a coach at SV Resse von 1963 eV After three and a half years with three promotions up to the 1st district class, he switched to VfB Peine , then to SpVgg Bad Pyrmont and subsequently to Prussia Hameln .

Otto Laszig lived in Resse , part of the municipality of Wedemark , in the north of the Hanover region .
