Ernst Poertgen

Ernst Poertgen (born January 25, 1912 in Altenessen ; † November 3, 1986 in Bonn) was a German football player .

Club career

The trained painter was considered a “magician on the ball” and was quick. His career, which was to bring him up to the national team, began at BV Altenessen 06 and led to Schwarz-Weiß Essen in 1931 . In 1934, after a brief interlude at 1. FC Nürnberg , he moved to FC Schalke 04 , where he spent his most successful time.

As early as 1934, the miners won the German championship 2-1 against 1. FC Nürnberg. In 1935 he successfully defended his title 6: 4 against VfB Stuttgart and striker Poertgen scored three goals almost alone for the victory. It wasn't enough for a double. In the cup final they lost to 1. FC Nürnberg with 0-2.

In 1936 there was nothing to harvest for Schalke. In the championship already defeated in the semi-finals against Nuremberg with 0: 2, it didn't work out in the cup final either. Here the winner was VfB Leipzig , who brought the 2-1 before the break over the second half.

In 1937, however, the next German championship was held. The constant opponent at this time, the club, was defeated 2-0 - and now the double succeeded. In the cup final Fortuna Düsseldorf was defeated 2-1 with the star players Stanislaus Kobierski , Paul Janes , etc.

In 1938 the championship finals were almost unbearably exciting. Despite two Poertgen goals, there was no winner against Hannover 96 in the first final . They separated 3: 3. The same result came after 90 minutes a week later, before Erich Meng scored the victory for Lower Saxony in the 117th minute.

The miners then won other championships, but Poertgen was no longer part of the team. In 59 Gauligapartien for the Royal Blues, the center forward scored 59 hits. Since 1937 he lived in Bonn because of his wife and at the end of 1938 he joined the Bonn FV . During the war he was stationed in Munich and played for FC Wacker Munich from 1939 to 1942 . In 1942 he was taken prisoner by the Americans and did not return to Bonn until 1946.

National team

If you already played as a striker for the subscription champions of that time, Schalke 04, and scored regularly, it was inevitable that you were called up for the national team. This is what happened to Ernst Poertgen, who met five times on his three missions between 1935 and 1937, but was still unable to prevail. After all, hardly any national player can record a goal rate of over 100 percent.
