Antoine "Spitz" Kohn (born November 1, 1933 in Luxembourg City ; † November 24, 2012 ) was a Luxembourg football player and coach . He ended his coaching career in 1989.

Player career

society

Kohn began his career in 1949 with the Luxembourg top club Jeunesse Esch . At the age of 16, the former attacker earned a regular place. In 1951 and 1954 he was able to win the national division with the club . In his last year for the club, he also won the Coupe de Luxembourg and thus made the double perfect. Some French clubs from Reims, Nancy and Valenciennes became aware of him through very good performances. Although he did an audition for the latter, there was no change.

In the summer of 1954, the striker went abroad via detours. Kohn took part in the international military championships in Brussels that year, where he met Adolf Patek , former coach of the Luxembourg national team and then coach at Karlsruher SC , who advised him to sign with the German club. With this change, "Spitz" Kohn finally became a professional footballer. Under coach Patek they reached the final of the DFB Cup in 1955 and defeated FC Schalke 04 3-2 there. The following year, the club became champions of the Oberliga Süd and qualified for the final round of the German championship. Here the KSC only had to admit defeat in the final against Borussia Dortmund . However, the cup was defended with a 3-1 win over Hamburger SV . The center forward scored the last goal for his team and decided the game. For his last success with Karlsruhe, Kohn was able to celebrate the southern championship again in 1958 before moving to Switzerland for FC Basel . At Basel he played 23 games and scored 11 goals and was third in the internal top scorer classification. Josef Hügi (13 goals) and Gottlieb Stäuble (12 goals) played with him .

During his time in Germany, the Luxembourger was repeatedly called into the military. You could tell how important he was to the team from the fact that Patek kept trying to get him off duty for games. After just a year, the attacker went to the Netherlands, where he joined Fortuna '54 from Sittard. Four good years personally were the result. In the 1964/65 season, Kohn decided to go to competitor Sportclub Enschede , but returned for the following season. Between 1965 and 1968 the striker wore the Enscheder dress again for three years before announcing the end of his career.

National team

Kohn was a national player for Luxembourg between 1953 and 1965 . He made his debut on April 6, 1952 in the 3-2 defeat against a Belgian B national team . In sixteen games he scored six goals for the colors of his country. He scored his first goal on September 20, 1953 in the 1: 6 defeat by France , when Kohn scored to equalize.

Coaching career

During his active career, Kohn trained as a trainer. This lasted six years before he completed it.

Four years after his active professional career, Kohn filled his first head coach. At that time, FC Twente Enschede signed him . With seven years in this position without a break, he holds the record as coach for Twente . The greatest success of this time was winning the KNVB Cup in 1977. In 1975 they also reached the final of the UEFA Cup , but lost there 0-0 after a two-way leg and 1: 5 in the second leg against Borussia Mönchengladbach .

After the paths between coach and club parted in 1979, Kohn signed with the Go Ahead Eagles . After finishing twelfth in the league, the relationship between the two parties ended after just one year. So Kohn moved to Belgium to the top club Club Bruges , but was soon dismissed there after poor performance. For the 1982/83 season, the football teacher hired Twente Enschede again, but things did not go as well there either, and Kohn was replaced by Fritz Korbach . In 1988 he was briefly employed by Ajax Amsterdam as a coach. After five game days in the following season, the club appointed him again as coach. So he managed to lead the team to the 1988 final for the European Cup Winners' Cup , but failed there due to KV Mechelen . Louis van Gaal acted as his assistant . Together they became runner-up. This was Kohn's last coaching position.

In the meantime he worked as a scout for SC Heerenveen and Udinese Calcio .
