Tschammer Cup 1938
The Tschammerpokal 1938 was the fourth edition of the German soccer cup competition.
The competition started on January 9, 1938, initially according to the mode of previous years with the elimination rounds for the teams of the district and district classes, then with the group games as well as the two final rounds and the round of 16. While the competition was already running, Austria was annexed to the German Reich on March 13, 1938. After the end of the Austrian football season 1937/38 , Austrian football was incorporated into the German Football Association, which decided that eight Austrian teams would take part in the Tschammer Cup from the quarter-finals. The first six of the past championship and two second-class relay winners were selected. The quarter-finals were divided into three rounds, two elimination rounds with eight teams each from the “Altreich” and “ Ostmark ” (Austria) and then the actual quarter-finals. Cup winner 1938 was on January 8, 1939 the last Austrian champion SK Rapid Vienna .

Match report |
The FSV Frankfurt went fifth in the Gauliga Südwest 1937/38 against the Austrian champions 1937/38 Rapid Vienna in the final. While the Frankfurt players were only mediocre, the Viennese were able to offer five current Austrian national players, above all captain Franz Binder, who had already played 19 times for Austria. Frankfurt was also handicapped because it had to do without its striker Heinrich Schuchardt, who had been banned after being sent off in the semifinals. However, the Hessians could point out that they had been unbeaten in the Gauliga for nine months.
When there was sleet, the Frankfurt team initially determined the game, benefiting from the poor space conditions in their combative style of play. A surprise soon loomed when Frankfurt's center forward Franz Dosedzal headed his team in the 17th minute. Until well into the second half, the FSV remained visually superior, while the Viennese did not find their game flow on the slippery ground and rather tried hard to find success. Her goalkeeper Rudolf Raftl had to intervene several times in Frankfurt goal chances. After an hour, however, the Hessians had to pay tribute to their exhausting style of play. When their right defender Willy Mai had to retire injured in the 69th minute, the Frankfurt game finally collapsed. The Viennese, known for their dangerous last quarter of an hour, were able to design the game according to their system and in the 80th minute used their superiority to equalize the goal by their half-right attacker Georg Schors. Just five minutes later, Rapid took the lead with a remarkable 25-meter shot by midfielder Johann Hofstätter, and immediately before the final whistle, Franz Binder made the all-important 3-1 for Rapid Wien from a suspicious position. The Frankfurt appendix could not get over the defeat and saw their team cheated by referee Fritz Rühle. A large number of spectators stormed onto the square, and in the stands there was chanting: “Tschammer von Osten - your cup, it's supposed to rust!” - an unusual provocation in the National Socialist state. |
