Aílton (born July 19, 1973 in Mogeiro , Paraíba ; real name Aílton Gonçalves da Silva ) is a former Brazilian soccer player . With Werder Bremen , the fast forward center forward was 2004 German champion , cup winner and top scorer of the Bundesliga . In the same year he was also the first foreigner to be voted footballer of the year in Germany .

In the Bundesliga he also played for FC Schalke 04 , Hamburger SV and MSV Duisburg . He scored a total of 106 Bundesliga goals in his career, making him the third of a total of five foreign players to have scored more than 100 goals in the Bundesliga. Internationally, the Brazilian, also known as Toni in Germany and, because of his corpulence, also known as Kugelblitz , played as a player in Mexico , Turkey , Serbia , Switzerland , Ukraine , Austria and China in addition to his home country . In total, he was used for 21 clubs over a period of 20 years. From 2009 he let his career end with lower-class clubs in Germany.

Player career

Brazil and Mexico (1993–1998)

Aílton's career began in Rio Grande do Sul with Ypiranga FC from Erechim . After a short trip to the Mogi Mirim EC in São Paulo state , he returned to Ypiranga FC, with whom he was sixth in the 1995 national championship and with 16 goals at the same time the top scorer of the competition.

He then briefly worked for the capital club SC Internacional in Porto Alegre , Santa Cruz FC in Recife, northeast Brazil, and Guarani FC in Campinas , São Paulo .

In 1997 he moved abroad when he was hired by the UANL Tigres in San Nicolás de los Garza, Mexico (near Monterrey ).

Werder Bremen (1998-2004)

In October 1998 Aílton moved to SV Werder Bremen . After initial difficulties under coach Felix Magath and only two Bundesliga goals in his debut season, he gradually developed into a top performer. In 1999/2000 he scored twelve goals, 2000/01 13, 2001/02 16, 2002/03 also 16. In 2003/04 he was the top scorer in the Bundesliga with 28 goals. This season he became German champion with Werder Bremen and won the DFB Cup for the second time since 1999 , to which he also contributed six goals as top scorer. He scored a total of 88 Bundesliga goals, 15 of them from penalties, gave 30 assists and scored eleven goals in the Cup for Werder. With 37 points, he set a new interim record in the scorer rating that has been held since the 1995/96 season . He was also voted Germany's Footballer of the Year as the first foreign player .

FC Schalke 04 (2004-2005)

Aílton at FC Schalke 04

For the 2004/05 season he moved to FC Schalke 04 in Gelsenkirchen for free. With 14 goals in 29 Bundesliga games, he was again able to show a strong goal rate and with a total of 102 goals now rose to the third most successful foreign Bundesliga shooter behind Giovane Élber and Stéphane Chapuisat . He is also Schalke's “fastest” Bundesliga goalscorer; he scored on October 30, 2004 in a 3-2 win against VfB Stuttgart after 38 seconds. Due to ongoing conflicts with the club management of FC Schalke 04, they agreed to an early termination of the contract and a club change in return for a transfer payment. In the end, the Turkish top club Beşiktaş Istanbul secured the rights to Aílton for the 2005/06 season for 3.5 million euros. Aílton was runner-up with Schalke and reached the 2005 cup final .

Between Turkey, Germany, Serbia and Switzerland (2005-2007)

In July 2005, Aílton began working at Beşiktaş Istanbul . He achieved u. a. scored against Bolton Wanderers in the 2005/06 UEFA Cup group stage in October . In December 2005, Aílton was removed from the squad for the other games after he had previously attempted to flee to Brazil , but could be stopped by Beşiktaş manager Mehmet Eksi at the airport. The reason for the escape was that he was not included in the starting grid after a circulatory collapse. However, because he hadn't found a new club during the winter break - he wanted to go back to the Bundesliga - he returned to the Bosporus in January 2006 .

One week before the end of the winter transfer list, Hamburger SV signed Aílton in January 2006 for an estimated loan amount of 450,000 euros by June 30, 2006. With Hamburgers he earned 55,000 euros net per month, plus another 10,000 euros net per Bundesliga match . The Hamburg-based firm also secured the option to buy Aílton on June 30, 2006 for an estimated EUR 1.75 million. The club decided against the option. Aílton contracted a broken jaw on February 8, 2006 in the game against Hannover 96, but soon returned to team training and scored a total of three goals for HSV.

Aílton was still banned from the squad after returning to Beşiktaş Istanbul, but had to complete individual training twice a day. His intended stay in the Bundesliga did not materialize, so that at the beginning of the 2006/07 season he moved to the Serbian league at Red Star Belgrade for six months . Belgrade paid a transfer fee of 300,000 euros. Red Star won the 2006/07 Serbian Championship.

During the winter break of the 2006/07 season, Aílton could leave Red Star Belgrade. The Grasshopper Club Zurich signed him on loan (with purchase option) until the summer of 2007. In the first game (against FC Aarau ) on 24 February 2007 like him scoring his first goal, the game-deciding to 1: 0 win for GC. In total, he scored nine goals in 13 games. However, Zurich waived the purchase option.

Globetrotter with changing stations (2007–2009)

In the summer break of 2007 Aílton moved to MSV Duisburg . For this, 100,000 euros were paid to Red Star Belgrade, with whom Aílton was formally under contract. His only Bundesliga club for the MSV, the 106th and last overall, he scored in the 1: 3 home game against his ex-club Werder Bremen and drew level with Stéphane Chapuisat as the second most successful foreign scorer for a short time; the following season he was overtaken by Claudio Pizarro from Werder Bremen. He was replaced in the 65th minute to a standing ovation from his own and even to frenetic cheers and chants from the opposing fans, with Aílton apologizing to the Werder fans after his goal. On January 4, 2008 he was suspended by coach Rudi Bommer because he did not appear at the start of the second half of the training session. The contract was terminated on February 25th.

Next he signed a two-year contract with the Ukrainian first division team of Metalurh Donetsk . On April 12, 2008 Aílton scored his first goal for the club in a 2-1 win against Naftowyk-Ukrnafta Ochtyrka. After only two league games, Aílton wanted to leave Donetsk again, which was soon disputed: Donetsk demanded a transfer fee should Aílton terminate the contract prematurely; Aílton, however, said that Donetsk had not complied with the terms of the contract. Ultimately, it was agreed that Aílton would look for a new club on loan, but Donetsk could keep the transfer rights.

On August 25, 2008 Aílton signed a contract until 2009 in the Austrian Bundesliga with SCR Altach , who loaned the player from Donetsk. After initial turbulence - in an interview he said Altach was “not a professional team” - he scored the first goal for his new team in a 3-1 away win against LASK Linz on October 5th . In January 2009 he got out of his contract with Altach and did not return to his home club in Donetsk. At this point, however, Aílton said it was clear that he did not want to end his career yet.

In March 2009, the Brazilian second division Campinense took Clube Aílton under contract. The contract ran until the end of November 2009, but was terminated in July 2009.

In the summer of 2009 Aílton moved to Chongqing Lifan in the Chinese Super League. In the past five years, this club was its tenth and overall its seventeenth station. With this, Aílton played professional football in eight different countries, excluding his home nation. His engagement ended here at the end of October 2009.

Career finale in lower leagues (2009-2013)

In December 2009, Aílton moved to the Lower Rhine division KFC Uerdingen 05 , which some initially dismissed as a PR gag. There he received a contract until 2011. On February 24, 2010, he made his debut in the league game against the second team of Wuppertaler SV Borussia (1: 1), when he came on after 62 minutes, but remained goalless. He scored his first goal in his eighth outing against VfB Homberg .

In the summer break of 2010, Aílton returned to Bremen for the 2010/11 season to play for the regional division FC Oberneuland . There he was trained by Mike Barten , who was still a teammate when he was in Werder. The first competitive game for his new club Aílton completed on August 14, 2010 in the first round of the DFB Cup . He was substituted on in the 61st minute, but could no longer prevent the narrow 1-0 defeat against Bundesliga club SC Freiburg . In his second league game on August 27, 2010 (3rd matchday), he scored the first goal of the season in the 2: 3 defeat against Holstein Kiel . At the end of January 2011, Aílton and FC Oberneuland went their separate ways. Aílton had previously missed the start of training for the second half of the season and only appeared shortly before the start of the second half of the season in Bremen. Aílton stated that the reason for the separation was that he was homesick for Brazil. Accordingly, he returned to Brazil in February 2011 and signed with the Rio Branco Esporte Clube, which was represented in the São Paulo state championship .

Financially, Aílton faced an uncertain future because he was unable to get along with the income during his career.

In July 2012, Aílton completed the medical check-up at the sixth-class Rheinhessen federation league club Hassia Bingen and signed a one-year contract on July 26, 2012 with the option of an extension. In his first game for Hassia on August 11, 2012, he came on in the 68th minute and scored both goals for the 2-0 final against SpVgg Ingelheim . Despite his 13 goals scored by the end of the season, he could not prevent relegation to the national league. Nevertheless, he extended his contract with Hassia Bingen for another year. It was the first time since he left Werder Bremen in 2004 that he remained loyal to a club beyond one season.

Aílton ended his career at the end of 2013. On September 6, 2014, SV Werder Bremen hosted a farewell game in the Weserstadion, which was sold out with 40,000 spectators. Against a selection of players from the 2004 championship team, Aílton compiled a South American selection, supplemented by other companions from his career.

Because of his performance at Werder Bremen, he was the first foreigner to be voted Germany's Footballer of the Year in 2004. After Stéphane Chapuisat (106) and Giovane Élber (133), Aílton became the third foreign player to score more than 100 goals in the Bundesliga.

Aílton has a reputation for being an enfant terrible . Nevertheless, he was considered a public favorite, especially during his time in Bremen. He later failed to achieve this level of popularity in Schalke, despite a considerable number of goals. Aílton was also criticized for not showing any joy when his teammates scored, which also earned him the reputation of an egoist who plays less for the team than for personal success.

Since Aílton saw no chance of being called up to the Brazilian national team, he temporarily toyed with the idea of accepting German citizenship . Naturalization in Qatar was also up for debate after the then German team boss Rudi Völler had seen no need. However , in 2004 the FIFA Emergency Committee determined that players who accept a new citizenship will not be eligible to play on the national teams of this association if there is no connection to this country, for example through parents or grandparents born there.

In March 2007, Aílton's former player agent Werner Helleckes auctioned trophies and other personal items of the Brazilian at the internet auction house ebay . Among other things, the top scorer cannon , which Aílton was awarded in 2003/04, was offered. The reason for the auction was, according to Hellecke, Aílton's debts to his advisor. On March 9, 2007, 80 minutes before the end of the auction, ebay canceled the auction with a bid of over € 600,000. The reason for this was an injunction that was obtained by Aílton. Aílton then made the trophy available to the Werder Museum for the exhibition until the end of his career.

Private

Aílton has been married to his Mexican wife Rosalie since 2004. He has three daughters and a son with her and lives with his family in Dallas , Texas , USA . A fifth child lives in Brazil.
