The Campinense Clube , usually just called Campinense , is a football club founded in 1915 from Campina Grande , a town in the Brazilian state of Paraíba with around 370,000 inhabitants . The club colors are red and black, the club's mascot is the fox ( Portuguese : Raposa ). 2008 Campinense managed the rise in the national second division: the Série B .

Main competitors are the capital city club Botafogo FC from João Pessoa (not to be confused with the club Botafogo FR ) and local rivals FC Treze . In general, these three clubs share dominance in Paraíba.

history

The club was founded in 1915 as a dance club for the local aristocracy and cotton barons. In 1919 a soccer game began for the first time, but it was stopped the following year, as there were various unsightly things and even brawls.

In 1954 the physician Gilvan Barbosa finally succeeded in convincing the club management to offer the members football again. This succeeded sustainably and in 1958 gaming operations were even professionalized. In 1960 Campinense played for the first time for the state championship and won the title straight away - and the club would keep it for six years, which is a state record to this day. Campinense should be able to maintain its dominance in Paraíba until the 1970s.

In 1961 Campinense was the first team from Paraíba to take part in a national competition, the Taça Brasil cup competition, which had been held for the first time two years earlier . In 1975 the club also took part in the top tier of the national championship , which had only been introduced four years earlier . Of the 42 participants, Campinense was the only one without a win and is listed last in statistics.

A particularly successful year in the club's history was 2008. Not only did the second national championship of the decade succeed, but fourth place in the national third division, the Série C , was also enough for the first promotion to the second division, the Série B, since Introduction of the modern league system in 2003. In the 2009 season, however, the club rose again immediately in nineteenth place. In the 2011 season, the club even had to go to the D series .

For a long time Campinense lived in the urban Estádio Plínio Lemos , in the José Pinheiros district. After the larger state Estádio Governador Ernani Sátyro , known as Amigão, with a capacity of 40,000, was completed in 1975, the association moved there.

At the inauguration game of this classic Brazilian, almost round stadium on March 8, 1975, Campinense was able to wrest a 0-0 draw from the great Botafogo from Rio de Janeiro . A week later it was a red and black who scored the first goal in the new arena. On March 16, 1975, Pedrinho Cangula scored 1-0 against Treze FC. But after 90 minutes it was 1: 1.

In 2006 Campinense opened its own stadium, the 3,000-seat Estádio Renato Cunha Lima , also known as Raposão or Renatão. The stadium is located in the Bela Vista district and is primarily used for training and by subordinate teams.
