history

The association was founded on April 1st, 1911, although the association cites April 2nd to avoid the usual jokes. The name pays homage to the opera O Guarani , based on the novel of the same name by José de Alencar , the main work of the Brazilian composer Carlos Gomes , which deals with a love story with an Indian background. The first official game took place on June 18, 1911 against the Sport Club 15 de Novembro , also from Campinas, and was lost 3-0.

In 1950 the club played for the first time in the top division of the state of São Paulo. 1973 Guarani was first class nationally, and played a total of 29 seasons at the highest level by 2010. After the championship of 1978 under the later national coach Carlos Alberto Silva , Guarani also moved into the semi-finals of the Copa Libertadores in 1979 , which was held in two groups of three , but failed there at the subsequent winner Club Olimpia from the Paraguayan capital Asunción . Miltão von Guarani was the top scorer of the competition with six goals.

As runner-up in 1986 and 1987, he qualified two more times for the Libertadores. After elimination after the preliminary round in 1987, Gurani qualified the following year as group winners for the second round, but failed there to CA San Lorenzo de Almagro after a 1-1 in Buenos Aires and a 0-1 defeat at home. In 1988 and 2012 Guarani was also runner-up at the state championship in São Paulo .
