José Martiniano de Alencar (born May 1, 1829 in Mecejana, near Fortaleza in Brazil , † December 12, 1877 ) was a Brazilian writer .

The son of the influential Senator José Martiano de Alencar was one of the most important exponents of Brazilian romanticism . From 1840 to 1850 he studied law in Rio de Janeiro , São Paulo and Pernambuco and then settled in Rio de Janeiro, where he wrote for various magazines. When he was banned from publishing some articles in the Correio Mercantil , he decided to be his own boss and bought the Diario do Rio de Janeiro newspaper with some friends . Here he published his first novels Cinco Minutos (1856) and A viuvinha (1857) as chief editor . In 1857 one of his most important works, O Guarani , was published, the first part of a trilogy about the indigenous population of Brazil , which was to follow in 1865 Iracema , an identity-creating novel for the Brazilian people, and in 1874 Ubirajara .

Alencar was a staunch Brazilian and campaigned for the independence of his home country in his work. It was undoubtedly a personal highlight when he rose to ministerial position in 1877 under Dom Pedro II , the second emperor of Brazil, which was officially independent since 1822. However, he was only able to exercise this office for a short time because he died of tuberculosis on December 12, 1877.

Machado de Assis chose him when the Academia Brasileira de Letras was founded in 1897 as the patron saint of chair 23, which has since been considered particularly prestigious.

The Praça José de Alencar in Fortaleza and the historic Teatro José de Alenca located on this square, as well as an underground station of the Metrô de Fortaleza , were named after him .
