The Metrô de Fortaleza is managed by the transport company Metrofor and thus replaces the previous Superintendência de Trens Urbanos de Fortaleza , which was responsible in collaboration with the CBTU . Once completed, the metro system is expected to transport around 485,000 passengers a day.

history

The Metrofor was established in May 1997 founded with the aim of the rail-bound transport system from Fortaleza to modernize what until then task of the state railway company CBTU was.

The construction work for the metro began in January 1999 with the separation of goods traffic and passenger traffic on a railway line. Before that, both operated on the same Companhia Ferroviária do Nordeste route .

The actual construction of the subway did not begin until 2001 with the construction of the Linha Sul (south line). The completion of this line was planned for the end of 2011 after many construction stops. In 2006, the government of the state of Ceará commissioned the Spanish company Eptisa to carry out a study for the construction of a new metro line. This new line is to connect the Parangaba station with the Mucuripe district via the Borges de Melo station.
