Metro de Belo Horizonte
The Metrô de Belo Horizonte is the subway system of the Brazilian city of Belo Horizonte .
line 1
Construction of the metro began in 1981 with the route from Eldorado to São Gabriel. It comprised 16 stations over a length of 23.5 km and runs entirely above ground. The first connection between Eldorado and Lagoinha (at that time still without the Vila Oest station) was put into operation on August 1, 1986 . The construction had to be stopped in 1987 due to financial problems; by then about half of the route (12.5 km with seven stops) had been completed. Construction continued four years later and was finally completed in 2002 with the commissioning of the Vilarinho station. The entire underground route was 28.1 km long and served 19 stations. As early as 2001, the subway was handed over by the CBTU ( Companhia Brasileira de Trens Urbanos ), founded in 1984, to the Trem Metropolitano de Belo Horizonte SA , but is still administratively subordinate to the state-owned CBTU group. The train operates daily from 5.45 am to 11 pm.
Further expansion
line 1
In the long term, Line 1 can be extended via the two current terminal stops.
Line 2
Another line, Line 2, has been under construction since 1998. It will branch off from Calafate station and head south to Barreiro. This section of the route will be around 9 km long and include a total of six stops. As a kind of bypass line 1 is being built at the connection Santa Teresa (line 1) to a connection with line 2 at the Tereza Christina station. It intersects Line 3. It is also called Line 2 and will be 11 km long.
Line 3
A line 3 is also being discussed, which is to cross the city center in a north-south direction and which will enable a connection to the airport.
