The Metrô de Salvador in the Brazilian city of Salvador da Bahia is operated by the Companhia de Transportes de Salvador railway company, which is managed by the Companhia Brasileira de Trens Urbanos (CBTU). Seven stations were in operation in October 2015. Their number had grown to 18 by October 2017.

history

Line 1 and 2

The Companhia de Transportes de Salvador was founded in 1999 with the aim of redesigning local rail transport in Salvador. As a result, the construction of the metro in Salvador began. The state operating company is under the control of the CBTU .

The metro has been organized at state level since March 8, 2013, and the city administration has given up its responsibility for it.

The construction of the subway was divided into four stages:

  • Stage 1 - Line 1 - Lapa ↔ Pirajá
  • Stage 2 - Line 2 - Acesso Norte ↔ Aeroporto
  • Stage 3 - Line 1 - Pirajá ↔ Águas Claras (planned)
  • Stage 4 - Line 2 - Aeroporto ↔ Lauro de Freitas (planned)

line 1

Construction of line 1 (Lapa - Pirajá) began in April 2000 . The opening of the first line should take place in mid-2003. With a nine-year delay, the first six kilometers of the 2014 World Cup between Lapa and Acesso Norte were put into operation in June 2014 .

The Retiro station was opened on August 25, 2014, and the Bom Juá station on April 22. In December 2015, the Pirajá station, which is located at a large transfer bus station, will follow. Between the Brotas and Acesso Norte stations, the construction of an additional station (Bonocô) began in February 2015, the opening of which took place on November 13, 2015.

Line 2

Construction work on Line 2 began on February 6, 2015. It begins at the Acesso Norte station and will end in Lauro de Freitas. A first 2.2 km long section between Acesso Norte and Rodoviária was opened in December 2016. A 6.2 km long route extension with four further stations - from Rodoviária to Pituaçu - followed in May 2017. On September 11, 2017, four more stations were opened up to the provisional final stop in Mussurunga.

Mishaps

On November 4, 2014, a wagon derailed shortly after leaving the Acesso Norte station. This incident went without further damage. Much more problematic was the damage to a 1.2 meter main water pipe on April 1, 2015 as part of the metro expansion between the Bom Juá and Pirajá stations, which left over 100 drinking water distribution stations without a supply. About 1,000,000 people were affected by the week-long break.
