KORAIL ( kor.  코레 일 - short form of Korea Railroad Corporation ) is a railway company in South Korea , which is operated as a state railway.

history

KORAIL was founded on September 1st, 1963. In 2004, the construction and maintenance of the railway infrastructure was outsourced to the Korea Rail Network Authority (KRNA) and KORAIL focused on rail transport.

Companies

The headquarters of KORAIL is located in Daejeon . KORAIL is active in both passenger and freight transport , operates some of its services on the Seoul subway and also operates most of the KTX high-speed trains , which are the fastest and most comfortable train types in Korea.

KORAIL has been an associate since April 2013 and has been a full member of the Organization for Cooperation between Railways (OSJD / OSJD) since June 2018 .

The state railway company KORAIL owned a total of 16,639 vehicles in April 2018.

High speed traffic

In April 2018 stood KORAIL total of 1,530 vehicles ( power cars and passenger cars ) for the trains that run on high-speed rail, are available.

The first generation of railcars for high-speed traffic were based on French TGVs . In 1994 a contract was signed between Alstom and KORAIL , according to which the first 12 trains in France and the following 34 in Korea. These trains are made up of 20 vehicles. In scheduled traffic, they run as the KTX ( K orea T rain e X press ) train type .

The second generation of high-speed trains is based on a Korean in-house development and has been running since 2010. The trains are made up of 10 vehicles and can run in double units if necessary . They are called KTX-Sancheon.

In a next step, another train was developed. It is called a High-speed Electric Multiple Unit (HEMU). During test drives in 2013 it reached a speed of 421 km / h. The trains are to be used in scheduled traffic from 2020.

KORAIL owned 456 locomotives in April 2018:

  • SL: 801
  • DEL : 2000, 2100, 3000, 3100, 3200, 4000, 4100, 4200, 4300, 4400, 5000, 6000, 6100, 6200, 6300, 7000, 7100, 7200, 7300, 7400, 7500, 7600
  • EL : 8000, 8100, 8200 (a Siemens EuroSprinter locomotive developed in Germany ), 8500.
  • DMU: DEC, NDC, CDC, DHC

Other vehicles

In April 2018, KORAIL still owned 2,937 railcars for non-high-speed traffic. There were 10,665 freight cars , 920 passenger cars and 116 generator cars in the inventory .

In April 2018, KORAIL operated a railroad network of 4078 km in length (excluding the services on the Seoul subway), on which 3,427 connections were offered daily.

96 lines are served nationwide in passenger transport. Around 3.5 million travelers use the offer every day. There are four types of train :

  • Local traffic is served by Tonggeun ( 통근 열차 , 通勤 列車 ; shuttle train ).
  • The next higher category is Mugunghwa ( 무궁화 호 , 無窮 花 號 ; Sharonrose ).
  • The Saemaeul trains ( 새마을호 , 새마을 號 ; New Community ), which offer more comfort , stop less frequently .
  • Korea Train Express (KTX) which operates in high-speed traffic.

In addition, KORAIL also offers a number of tourist trains through particularly attractive landscapes: Sea Train ( S-Train ), V-Train , O-Train , Haerang Rail Cruise Train and the " Peace Train" (DMZ Train).

KORAIL also operates a sub-network of the Seoul Subway. Here, KORAIL makes 2,571 trips a day, transporting 3.2 million travelers a day and 1.16 billion a year.

International cooperation

KORAIL is also active internationally in consulting and planning in the field of railways as well as the sale of railroad vehicles. This happened and is happening in Egypt , Argentina , Bangladesh , Bolivia , Bulgaria , Democratic Republic of the Congo , Iran , Libya , Malaysia , Myanmar , Pakistan , Paraguay , Philippines , South Africa , Tanzania and Vietnam .
