Metro do Cariri

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Metrô do Cariri is a light rail system operated by the Brazilian railway company Metrofor in the state of Ceará . It connects the cities of Crato and Juazeiro do Norte , which form a common metropolitan area.

In the first phase, 9 stations were built and a railway line of 13.6 km in length. It is estimated that around 5000 passengers per day are transported on this route. The route is served by light diesel railcars. The trains run from Monday to Saturday in regular intervals.

The inauguration of the route was originally expected on November 24, 2009. Experimental operation began in December 2009, and regular operation began in 2010.

In order to save costs, the route was constructed on an existing route, but rails and material were relocated in order to be able to achieve a higher speed. Later this line will be extended to Barbalha, in the south of Juazeiro do Norte .
