José Alencar Gomes da Silva (born October 17, 1931 in Muriaé , † March 29, 2011 in São Paulo ) was a Brazilian politician and entrepreneur .

Life

He came from a small business family and, as the eleventh child, according to his own biography, was brought up to work at an early age. In 1950 he founded his first company, a small shop. More followed in the course of time. He was extremely successful in doing this and finally, together with his son Christiano, managed the Coteminas Group , the largest textile company in Brazil with over 15,000 employees, with headquarters in the town of Montes Claros in Minas Gerais . He was said to have a hard hand in running his companies and dealing with unions.

He began his political career in 1994 with an unsuccessful candidacy for governor in his home state. In 1998 he was elected to the Brazilian Senate. There he served on the committees for economic affairs and social affairs. In the 2002 presidential election, as a member of the right-wing conservative Partido Liberal (PL "Liberal Party"), he supported the more left-wing Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva from the Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT "Workers Party" ) and was won by his election on January 1, 2003 as Vice President of Brazil. From 2004 to 2006 he also held the office of Minister of Defense. In 2006, like many of his party colleagues, he switched to the newly founded Partido Republicano Brasileiro (PRB) party before the presidential elections this year . This party is said to have close ties to the Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus , an evangelical free church . It operates its own television station, TV-Record , the second most important television station in the country. In October 2006 Lula da Silva was re-elected and with him José Alencar was again Vice President of Brazil. On January 1, 2011, at the end of his second term, he resigned from the office of Vice President, and was succeeded by Michel Temer .

José Alencar died of cancer on March 29, 2011. He was first diagnosed with the disease in 1997. Alencar had been treated several times during his tenure as Vice President.
