Career

society

Elano began his professional career in 1998 in his home country with Guarani FC . Soon after, the offensive player moved to SC Internacional , where it only held him for a short time before he was drawn to Pelé club FC Santos . There he played together with his future national team colleagues such as Robinho , Diego and Alex . At the FCS , Elano fitted in quickly and became a regular. In 2004 he was able to win the Campeonato Brasileiro de Futebol with the club and thus the first title in his career. His good performances got him into the notepads of European scouts. He finally ventured to Europe in 2004 and signed with the Ukrainian first division club Shakhtar Donetsk . The midfielder had a difficult time at the Eastern European Club. Often he was just a spectator and only made 13 league appearances in the first year. In the following season Elano developed into a key player in the team. His good performances also brought him into the focus of the national team for the first time in 2006 and he became the first Brazilian to make his debut in the Brazilian national team after performing in the Ukrainian Premjer-Liha .

In the summer break of 2007 Elano moved to Manchester City . There Elano received a four-year contract. On the first day of the 2007/08 season he made his Premier League debut against West Ham United . Right away he made the jump into the starting eleven, although he had to compete with players like Geovanni , Dietmar Hamann , Stephen Ireland , Michael Johnson and Martin Petrow . The attacking Brazilian scored his first league goal for ManCity on September 29, 2007 against Newcastle United . Elano scored three more goals in the next two games against Middlesbrough FC and Birmingham City . With a total of eight goals in that season, he was the club's top scorer. Because of a trip with the national team, Elano returned late in preparation for the 2008/09 season. Still, he got off to a good start into the season. Because of the signings of Shaun Wright-Phillips , Vincent Kompany and Robinho, however, he had a difficult time in Mark Hughes' team . Although Elano came to 28 league games, but was only substituted on or off 19 times. Even so, he scored six goals and was the best shooter behind Robinho and Stephen Ireland.

For the 2009/10 season Elano moved to Galatasaray Istanbul in Turkey. On August 20, 2009 he made his competitive debut in qualifying for the UEFA Europa League against the Estonian club FC Levadia Tallinn . In the 5-0 success, coach Frank Rijkaard replaced him in the 69th minute for Milan Baroš . In the Turkish Süper Lig , the midfielder came three days later to his first game. After being substituted on at half time, he scored the interim goal to make it 3-1 in the 4-1 win against Kayserispor . From then on, coach Rijkaard relied heavily on the Brazilian.

On November 30, 2010 Elano moved to FC Santos for 2.9 million euros . Together with Liédson ( SC Corinthians ) he was the most successful goalscorer in the Campeonato Paulista 2011.

On July 8, 2012, he was transferred to the Grêmio FBPA . In return, Argentine striker Ezequiel Miralles moved to Santos FC. Elano signed a three-year contract in Porto Alegre . In 2014 he was loaned to CR Flamengo . However, he returned to Grêmio in August 2014. A short time later, his contract was terminated.

In September 2014, he signed a deal with the Indian ISL franchise Chennaiyin FC . There he is under contract as the team's marquee player. This means that he is considered the most important player on the team. He scored a goal in his first game for Chennaiyin FC on October 15, 2014.

National team

Elano celebrated his international premiere in the dress of Brazil on October 13, 2004 against Colombia . The then selection coach Carlos Alberto Parreira changed him in the 58th minute of the game for Alex . The match ended 0-0. He scored his first and second goals in the Brazilian national team on September 3, 2006 in a friendly against Argentina in a 3-0 win. In 2007 Elano got his first nomination for a competition when he was in the Seleção squad for the Copa América in Venezuela.

The team fought their way to the final, where they met Argentina. Elano, who was in the starting line-up, was replaced by Dani Alves in the 34th minute . His team won 3-0. Two years later, the midfielder was part of the team that won the Confederations Cup in 2009 . In the course of the tournament, Elano only made two appearances. After Elano played regularly during qualifying for the 2010 World Cup , coach Carlos Dunga appointed him to the Brazilian squad in May 2010 .

During the entire tournament, however, the midfielder only came to two games and scored two goals. After Elano was injured in the second round match against Ivory Coast , he had to be replaced. In the quarter-finals, the team was eliminated against the Netherlands . After the World Cup in South Africa, which was disappointing for the Brazilian national team , Elano was one of the few experienced players under new coach Mano Menezes , who was regularly called up to the Brazilian squad. In summer 2011, the midfielder was for the Copa America in Argentina nominated .

Levir Culpi retired as a coach at FC Santos on October 27, 2017. This happened after the 31st matchday of the 2017 championship round . The team was in third place at the time.
