Michael Johnson (born February 24, 1988 in Urmston , Greater Manchester ) is a former English football player .

The former youth international player, who can be used in a variety of ways in midfield , quickly drew comparisons with ex-City player Colin Bell and, due to his expansive runs, with Steven Gerrard , but suffered frequent injury setbacks at a young age.

Athletic career

Johnson played at Everton as a youth and joined Manchester City in 2004. He was part of the "Citizens" youth team, which reached the final of the FA Cup in 2006 and a short time later he had his premier in the Premier League on October 21, 2006 in the 4-0 defeat by Wigan Athletic . With his next game against FC Middlesbrough on March 17, 2007, he initiated a series of seven games for the first team and was also in the important games against Arsenal and Manchester United on the field from the start.

His first Premier League goal he scored on August 15, 2007 in a 1-0 win over Derby County . After a break as a result of an abdominal operation at the beginning of 2008, he initially built on the good performances in the 2008/09 season and harmonized particularly well with Stephen Ireland and Elano . However, his returning abdominal problems ensured that the season ended prematurely for him on September 24, 2008 with a 2-2 win against Brighton & Hove Albion in the League Cup and it was not until April 2009 that he made his comeback with the Manchester City reserve team.

In the 3-1 win against West Ham United , Johnson played a Premier League game again on September 28, 2009 (as a substitute for Gareth Barry ) and after just one more encounter the following month in the League Cup, he suffered such a serious knee injury admitted that the club announced in December 2009 that Johnson would no longer be seen in a professional game in the 2009/10 season.

For the 2011/12 season Johnson was loaned to Leicester City , but was sent back to Manchester City in January 2012.

On January 15, 2013 it was announced that Manchester City had already paid Johnson off shortly before Christmas 2012, thus terminating his contract. This only became known after a photo posted on Twitter showed Johnson not in shape and overweight.
