Joseph Akl

Joseph Akl (born August 5, 1936 in Damur ) is a Lebanese politician , lawyer and judge at the International Tribunal for the Sea .

After studying law , he in 1961 at the Université Saint-Joseph in Beirut graduated, received his doctorate he in 1962 in public right to a doctor of law at the Sorbonne . From 1963 to 1972 and from 1978 to 1982 he was a lecturer in public law at the law faculty of the Université Saint-Joseph and from 1963 to 1966 head of the consular department in the Lebanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Akl was Deputy Director of International Organizations and Conferences and International Treaties from 1966 to 1972, before serving as a member of the Washington, DC diplomatic staff from 1972 to 1978 . Akl was Lebanon's ambassador to the GDR from 1983 to 1990 and to Colombia from 1991 to 1994 .

He has been a judge at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in Hamburg since October 1, 1996 and was its vice-president from 2005 to 2008.

Akl is a member of the American Society for International Law and the Société française pour le droit international .
