Damur or Damour ( Arabic الدامور, DMG ad-Dāmūr ) is a coastal town in Lebanon , about 20 km south of Beirut . It is named after the river of the same name. Damur is located in the Governorate ( mohafazat ) Mount Lebanon . Damur became known because of a massacre during the Lebanese civil war on January 9, 1976 , in which the town was destroyed and the population, as far as they had not been able to escape, was murdered. Until this massacre, Damur was predominantly inhabited by Christians . The population at this time is given as about 25,000, the number of victims often 582. The act is usually attributed to Zuhair Muhsin and the PLO .

After the destruction of Damur, a fortified Palestinian camp was set up there. In 1982 the Palestinians had to leave Damur after the Israelis invaded Lebanon.

Today many of the residents have returned to Damur and the two destroyed churches have been rebuilt.
