Gena Dimitrova
Gena Dimitrova , also Ghena Dimitrova , Bulgarian Гена Димитрова (born May 6, 1941 in Beglesch near Pleven , Bulgaria ; † June 11, 2005 in Milan , Italy ) was a Bulgarian opera singer (soprano).
Life
She received her vocal training in Sofia and made her opera debut there in 1965. In the following years she appeared in all the major opera houses in the world. In 1984/85 she sang Lady Macbeth in Giuseppe Verdi's Macbeth at the Salzburg Festival .
The assertiveness of her voice was particularly evident in the title role of Giacomo Puccini's Turandot , with which she made her successful debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1987 . Ghena Dimitrova was considered one of the leading dramatic sopranos .
Dimitrova Peak , a mountain on Alexander I Island in Antarctica, has been named after her since 2017 .
