Martin Petrov ( bulg . : Мартин Петров , English transcription Martin Petrov ; born January 15, 1979 in Wraza ) is a former Bulgarian football player .

Career

In the club

Petrov started playing football at Botev Wraza . As a teenager he moved to CSKA Sofia . At the beginning of 1999 he went to Switzerland to Servette Geneva . In 2001 he moved to the Bundesliga for VfL Wolfsburg , for which he scored 28 goals and 36 assists in 116 games.

At the end of July 2005, Petrov went to Atlético Madrid . With the move, he fulfilled his childhood dream of playing in Spain, where his favorite club, FC Barcelona , also plays. The move was possible because Petrov had a release clause in his contract that said he could leave the club with a transfer fee of 10 million euros. In October 2006 he tore a cruciate ligament during the game against Recreativo Huelva and was out for over half a year. In July 2007, Petrov moved to England for £ 4.7 million for Manchester City , who were coached by Sven-Göran Eriksson in the 2007/08 season . In the summer of 2010, his contract with Manchester City was not extended and the midfielder then left the club.

In early July 2010, Petrov signed a two-year contract with Bolton Wanderers . In January 2013 he moved to the Spanish first division club Espanyol Barcelona and received a contract there until the end of the 2012/13 season . In October 2013, Petrov signed a contract with CSKA Sofia. He ended his career there in 2014.

National team

For the Bulgarian national football team , Petrov was 90 times in action, including a. at the 2004 European Football Championship in Portugal .

Awards

In 2006 he was voted Bulgaria's “Footballer of the Year” .
