Alexsandro de Souza (born September 14, 1977 in Curitiba , Brazil ), called Alex , is a former Brazilian midfielder who played for Fenerbahçe Istanbul from 2004 to 2012 . Most recently he was under contract with the Brazilian first division club Coritiba FC .
family
Since March 2000 he has been married to Dainanne, who was the daughter of the club president at the time. Together they have two daughters (Maria Eduarda, Antonia) and a son (Felipe).
profile
Alex was considered a good and technically very accomplished playmaker who is also very dangerous for goals. He had leadership qualities that, in addition to his stints with club teams, he was also able to demonstrate in the Brazilian national team.
Club soccer
1995 to 2003
He began his career at Coritiba FC , then moved to Palmeiras São Paulo . There he celebrated some successes and won the Copa Mercosur , the Copa do Brasil and in 1999 the Copa Libertadores with the team . In 1999 he was crowned third best goalscorer in the world by the IFFHS . In 2000, Alex played on loan to Flamengo Rio de Janeiro before signing with AC Parma in Italy. But before the Serie A season really started, he returned to Palmeiras. During his short time at Parma he scored 2 goals and 7 assists in 5 games. With the Brazilian club he reached the semi-finals of the Copa Libertadores in 2001. In the summer of 2002 he moved to Cruzeiro Belo Horizonte and became captain there. By the 2003/04 season he got 64 hits in 121 games for Cruzeiro. In the 2003/04 season itself, Alex scored 25 goals, including a penalty hat trick in one game. He was named Brazil's Player of the Year in 2003 . In 2012, Souza was voted the club's idol by fans of Cruzeiro.
Fenerbahçe Istanbul
In June 2004 he signed a three-year contract with Fenerbahçe Istanbul after a previously planned move to Turkey had failed in winter. In the 2004/2005 season he led Fenerbahçe to the championship title with 25 goals and also provided 19 assists. In the 2006/2007 season he was the top scorer in the Turkish league with 19 goals . This makes him the only foreign Fenerbahçe footballer to be the top scorer and the first Brazilian to become the top scorer of the Süperlig . In 2007 he extended his contract with Fenerbahçe for two more years until 2009. After Ümit Özat , Tuncay Şanlı and Rüştü Reçber left the club, Alex became the new team captain of Fenerbahçe. On November 1, 2008, he scored his 100th goal for Fenerbahçe Istanbul. In early 2009, he renewed his contract with Fenerbahçe Istanbul until May 31, 2011.
On August 16, 2009 he made his 150th league game for Fenerbahçe Istanbul. On September 12, 2011 Alex played his 900th game against Orduspor. On September 16, 2011, he made his 300th game for Fenerbahçe Istanbul.
The club's fans founded an initiative and sought permission to build an independently financed statue of Alex. A statue of him was then erected in Yoğurtçu Park and inaugurated on September 15, 2012. It stands next to the statue of the club legend Lefter Küçükandonyadis . Alex thus plays a more significant role in the history of the club in Fenerbahçe Istanbul, as no other statue has been erected in honor of any other player except Lefter. On October 1, 2012, his contract was terminated by coach Aykut Kocaman after he had previously fought private arguments with Alex for several weeks. This had an effect on the club in that Kocaman hardly ever used Alex in games and Alex then described him on Twitter as "jealous". Kocamans was then faced with the leave of absence. The jealousy mentioned by Alex can be explained by the fact that Aykut Kocaman has scored the most league goals in Fenerbahçe's club history with 140 goals and Alex was close to taking his place in second place with 136 league goals.
National team
On September 23, 1998, Alex played his first international game for the Brazilian national team against Yugoslavia. He participated in the FIFA Confederations Cup in 1999 and 2003 and was part of the Brazilian Olympic team in 2000 . Despite several appearances in qualifying for the 2002 World Cup , he was not nominated for the World Cup squad by coach Luiz Felipe Scolari . Alex represented his country in the tournaments for the Copa America in 1999, 2001 and 2004, which he also won in 1999 and 2004. At the Copa América 2004 in Peru , Alex was the captain of the Brazilian national team. He made five missions and converted a penalty in the quarter-final victory over Mexico . In total, he prepared seven goals. His last appearance in the Seleção was on October 12, 2005 against Venezuela.
