Ümit Özat (born October 30, 1976 in Ankara ) is a former Turkish soccer player and today's soccer coach .
Professional career
Born in Ankara, Özat moved to Gençlerbirliği Ankara in 1995 at the age of 19 . After more than 150 games and an argument with officials of the club, he was loaned to Bursaspor . In the 2000/01 season Özat had played 24 games for Bursaspor before moving to Fenerbahçe Istanbul . In the next two seasons he showed appealing performances with his new club. In the 2003/04 season he missed just two games of the season and scored seven goals, while Fenerbahçe won the title in the Turkish Süper Lig . His contract term was then extended for a further 3 years.
In May 2007 he signed a three-year contract with 1. FC Köln . In the 2008/09 season Özat went as the team captain of the Domstadt team.
On the third matchday of the 2008/09 season, Özat collapsed in the 25th minute of the game without outside interference in the away game at Karlsruher SC and was treated unconscious for minutes on the field. After he was admitted to a Karlsruhe hospital for further examinations, his condition became stable again in the late evening. The game continued and his team won 2-0. As it turned out later, myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle) was the cause of Özat's breakdown. On March 14, 2009, Özat tearfully announced the end of his career for health reasons and on medical advice.
In the national team
Ümit Özat made his debut with the Turkish national team on August 16, 2000 in a friendly against Bosnia-Herzegovina . He quickly established himself as a key player on the team and made two appearances at the 2002 FIFA World Cup , where Turkey finished third. In qualifying for UEFA EURO 2004 he sat on the bench but did not play a single game and watched his country fail to qualify for the European Championship in Portugal . Özat waited for his first international goal for almost four years. He succeeded on May 25, 2004 in a friendly against Australia with a free kick.
Style of play
The former captain of Fenerbahçe Istanbul is known for his calmness and professionalism. He is considered versatile and was used both as a preferred left or right full-back and as a center-back; he was also a dangerous long-range shooter.

Coaching career
After Ümit Özat had ended his playing career, he continued to work as an assistant coach at 1. FC Köln from April 2009. Previously, he had completed the trainer course for the A license in Turkey. In December 2009 Özat's contract with 1. FC Köln was terminated.
He then became Roger Lemerre's assistant at MKE Ankaragücü . In May 2010 Özat Lemerre was succeeded as head coach.
On January 26, 2012 he became head coach at Manisaspor . After a month he was sacked after five losses in six games.
At the beginning of August 2014, Özar took over the second division side Elazığspor . In the spring he resigned, but the management of the club was able to change his mind to continue his work. At the end of April 2015, he finally resigned as a coach.
For the 2015/16 season he was introduced as the new head coach at the second division side Boluspor . After a few weeks he resigned after having had a difference of opinion with the club's management over new signings. In mid-July 2015, Özat took over Samsunspor . After a good start to the season with a temporary lead in the table, he was unable to continue this successful trend with his team during the first half of the season. After his resignation was prevented by the club's officials, he finally resigned as a coach in January 2016.
A few days after his departure from Samsunspor, he took over the bottom of the table in the first division Mersin İdman Yurdu . At this club, the football players had not received their salaries for a long time and threatened to control team training. Özat paid the salaries out of his own pocket and tried to focus the team on staying up. After the situation had not improved, he resigned in May 2016.
From November 2016 to the end of August 2017 he trained Gençlerbirliği Ankara . After he was released in August 2017 and has since been replaced by Mesut Bakkal , he agreed to work again with the club in November 2017. After he had not been able to secure relegation at the end of the season, he left the club again in August 2018. In January 2019 he took over the second division club Giresunspor and looked after it for a month. Three days after leaving Giresunspor, he was hired as the new head coach of league rivals Adana Demirspor .
