Samsun Spor Kulübü or Samsunspor for short is a Turkish football club from Samsun . From the summer of 1969 onwards, the club played 30 seasons in the Süper Lig with brief interruptions over the following decades and is in 10th place in their all-time table . This makes the club the most consistent Black Sea representative of the top Turkish league behind their big arch rivals Trabzonspor . In the second half of the 1980s, the club played for the top of the table and was one of the strongest Turkish football clubs. This period ended with a tragic traffic accident involving the team bus in January 1989, which resulted in several deaths and injuries from the team. This accident is closely associated with the club's history and is considered to be one of the greatest tragedies in Turkish football . The club experienced a second period of success in the 1990s.
history
founding
The Samsunspor club was founded in 1965 through the merger of four amateur teams from Samsun - 19 Mayıs, Fener Gençlik, Akınspor and Samsunspor. The newly formed club became a professional football club. The current club colors are red and white. In addition, after a tragic accident in 1989 on the way to an away game in Malatya, the color black was added as a symbol of mourning. The symbol of the association is a representation of the city's Ataturk monument . Samsunspor is the only Turkish professional football club to have the founder of the Republic of Turkey on its coat of arms.
Accident in 1989 and relegation
On January 19, 1989, the team from Samsunspor traveled to the away game in Malatya . The club bus collided with a truck . In the accident , the coach Nuri Asan, the players Mete Adanır, Muzaffer Badaloğlu, Zoran Tomiç and the bus driver Asim Özkan lost their lives. Other players such as Yüksel Özan, Emin Kar, Erol Dinler, Şanver Göymen, Kasim Çıkla, Yüksel Öğüten and Halil Albayrak were in some cases very seriously injured. Emin Kar, Erol Dinler and Yüksel Öğüten had to end their careers. Today's training ground was named after the late trainer Nuri Asan.
Because of this accident Samsunspor could not play in the 1988-1989 season in the Süper Lig and all encounters were rated 0-3 for the opponents. The Turkish Football Association Türkiye Futbol Federasyonu (TFF) decided that the club would still remain first class.
In the following season, the club rose to the 2nd division.
First division time 1992 to 2006
From the season 1992/93 to 2005/2006, the club played continuously in the first division. Samsunspor once won the title of the Balkan Cup . Although the club has never participated in the European Cup, it qualified twice for the UI Cup and played at that time. a. also against Hamburger SV and Werder Bremen. In the 1997/98 season the club was trained by the former German national player Horst Hrubesch . In the 2005/2006 season, Samsunspor finished 17th and was relegated to the second Turkish league ( Bank Asya 1st Lig ) for the first time in 13 years .
2011 Return to the first division again
On July 9, 2010, the Samsunspor supporters protested with the participation of all three big fan clubs to draw attention to the poor financial situation and sporting prospects and called on the politicians to support the team.
After 30 game days in the 2010/2011 season , Hüseyin Kalpar's team rose to the Süper Lig for the first time since relegation in 2006 after a 3-0 win over Güngören Belediyespor. The seventh promotion in the history of the club, made the team the sole record holder in this area, before that they shared the place with Karşıyaka SK. The president of the association announced on March 22, 2012 that the association had no debts.
Vladimir Petković was presented as the new coach in June , and the team was reinforced with well-known players and others. a. Michael Fink and Selim Teber . On the last day of the transfer period, the team was reinforced again with the ex-Mainz Aristide Bancé . In the 2011/12 season of the Süper Lig , the Hinserie ended with only 12 points in 17th place in the table, 4 points behind a non-relegation place. For the second half of the season, the team was reinforced by Murat Ceylan , Serdar Özkan , Uğur Boral and Theofanis Gekas from Frankfurt Eintracht. At the end of the season, Samsunspor rose from the first division with a home defeat against Sivasspor.
After relegation in 2012
After the descent of Samsunspor in the summer of 2012, the club ran into great financial difficulties and could not pay its players' salaries. The situation came to a head in the 2014/15 season and Samsunspor was confronted with a penalty of nine points. This penalty could only be averted at the end of November 2014 after the outstanding salaries were paid to former players such as Theofanis Gekas and André Bahia .
Stadion
The old Samsun 19 Mayıs Stadı was a multi-purpose stadium in the center of the city of Samsun and is about to be demolished. It offered space for 19,720 spectators.
It was replaced in 2017 by the Samsun 19 Mayıs Stadyumu stadium of the same name in the Tekkeköy district, which now offers 33,919 seats.
coat of arms
The coat of arms shows the founder of Turkey Ataturk riding a horse. The model for this depiction is a statue that the sculptor Heinrich Krippel erected in 1931 for the city of Samsun.
Rivalries
Traditionally, the biggest rival is Trabzonspor. The first official duel between these two teams took place in 1967. At that time, Samsunspor defeated his opponent 1-0. The first staging of this duel was in 1955, when the respective predecessors of the two teams 19 Mayis and Trabzon Idman Ocagi met in Samsun. Since the fans wanted to storm the field, the referee stopped the game immediately. But this incident was only the first of the scandals that followed.
The first major incident occurred in 1994 when both teams were playing for a European Cup place. With a controversial red card for Daniel Timofte in the 30th minute and other decisions, the referee turned the home fans against him. When there was an allegedly unjustified penalty for the guests after 84 minutes, all dams broke. Hundreds of fans tried to storm the field and attack the referee. The then captain of Samsunspor Ercan Kologllu helped the referee to get into the cabin unharmed. The game was rated 0: 3 from the point of view of Samsunspor. There was also a three-game ban, which was reduced to one game after an appeal.
The two clubs were involved in the biggest referee scandal in Turkish football in 2002. For a long time, both teams fought against relegation. In the preliminary duel between the two teams, Trabzon took a 2-0 lead away from home. After the goal, the hosts were denied a penalty shortly before the end. Four years after this incident, the referee at the time, Sadik Ilhan, admitted that he had deliberately not given a penalty: “The MHK chairman warned me before the game that Trabzon should win this game and - although he would have been entitled - I have none Penalty given ” .
When the two teams met in January 2012, the Samsunspor team bus was attacked with stones and knives.
Known players
One of the most successful Turkish goal scorers of all time, Tanju Çolak , who also won the golden shoe, began his professional career at Samsunspor. İlhan Mansız , the former national player who successfully participated in the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea and has since ended his active career, also attracted attention for the first time at Samsunspor.
With Serkan Aykut , who scored the most goals in history for Samsunspor, 173 of them 165 in the Süper Lig , the club produced another top scorer. In the 1999/2000 season he was the top scorer with 30 goals. He too is one of the most successful Turkish goal scorers of all time.
