Lefter Küçükandonyadis ( Greek Λευτέρης Αντωνιάδης Lefteris Antoniadis ; born December 22, 1925 in Büyükada , Istanbul ; † January 13, 2012 in Şişli , Istanbul) was a Greek-born Turkish football player . Due to his many years of successful and sporting achievements for Fenerbahçe Istanbul , he is considered a Fenerbahçe sports legend, also in Turkish football history. He is one of five players who will be named in the official Fenerbahçe March .

Career

His nickname was Ordinaryüs because of his meticulous goal scoring . Lefter was always true to his nickname, he scored 832 goals in his running career.

Küçükandonyadis began his football career at Taksim SK and played for them until 1943. He then did four years of military service and in 1947 moved to Fenerbahçe Istanbul . The striker played for them for fifteen years between 1947 and 1964, with a two-year break, where he scored 423 goals in 615 games. With Fenerbahçe he won two Istanbul professional championships and was four times Turkish national champion . In the 1951/52 season Küçükandonyadis was active in the Italian Serie A at Fiorentina , where he completed 30 games and scored four goals. He spent the 1952/53 season at OGC Nice in the French Division 1 . Küçükandonyadis had a brief engagement at AEK Athens in the 1964/65 season before temporarily ending his active career. Between 1967 and 1968 he was active again at the age of 40 as the player-coach of the then Turkish second division team Boluspor and played over ten competitive games, after which Küçükandonyadis finally ended his active football career.

National team

He was a total of 50 national players . He was the team captain in eight games . With his final 21 goals for the Turkish national soccer team , he was the record scorer for four decades and was only replaced by Hakan Şükür in 1997 .

The Greek-born striker made his game and goal debut on April 23, 1948 in the Panathinaikos Stadium in a 3-1 win over Greece .

Later in the summer of 1948 Küçükandonyadis took part with the national team at the 14th Summer Olympics in London . In the Olympic soccer tournament they reached the quarter-finals and were eliminated from the later silver medal winners of the Yugoslav Olympic soccer selection. The quarter-finals of the Turkish national team was one of the greatest international successes in the history of the Turkish football association's national team .

With Lefter, Turkey took part in the finals of a soccer world championship for the first time in 1954 . In that tournament he scored two goals in three games, and Küçükandonyadis ran for the first time for the Turkish national team as a team captain. He was the first player to receive the Football Association's Gold Medal of Honor for his achievements .

On February 19, 1956, Küçükandonyadis sealed the end of the era of the legendary Golden Elf Hungary with his two goals in a 3-1 win at Mithatpaşa Stadı in a friendly international match.

Life after the football player career

After retiring from active football, Küçükandonyadis was club manager in Greece and Johannesburg in South Africa . In addition, he managed several clubs in Turkey, such as: Feriköy SK , Mersin Idmanyurdu , Boluspor , Samsunspor and Orduspor . Furthermore, he took over the second division side Sivasspor in November 1970 and replaced the resigned coach Naci Özkaya . He looked after this club until the end of the season and then left the city without prior notice, including the club.

Küçükandonyadis later worked as a columnist . On May 3, 2009, Lefter Küçükandonyadis was dedicated a life-size statue in Kuşdili Park in Istanbul's Kadıköy district for his extraordinary achievements and successes for Fenerbahçe, which he inaugurated himself.

He died of natural causes on January 13, 2012. A funeral service in honor of Lefter Küçükandonyadis was held in the football stadium of Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadı in Fenerbahçe, which was attended by current Fenerbahçe players, club president Aziz Yıldırım and then Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan . The Greek-born Küçükandonyadis was buried in his birthplace on the Istanbul island of Büyükada in the Greek Orthodox cemetery.
