Mersin İdman Yurdu is a Turkish football club from Mersin . The club played a total of 15 seasons in the Süper Lig in the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 2010s and is in 28th place in their all-time table . The club had its most successful first division season in the 1st Lig 1969/70 , in which the club reached 4th place in the table. The participation in the Turkish Cup finals in the 1982/83 season is another important success . In contrast to its first division times, the club is one of the most successful teams in the second-tier Turkish TFF 1st Lig . Here the club with five championships is behind Samsunspor (six titles) the team with the second-most titles and is always in the top two places in the all-time table of the TFF 1. Lig .
history
The club was founded on August 16, 1925 under the name Mersin Gençlerbirliği . At that time the club colors were red and white. In the course of the club's history, white was replaced by navy. In the 1962/63 season, the team managed to rise to the 2nd Turkish Football League . In 1964 the name of the club was changed to Mersin İdman Yurdu Spor Kulübü . In the third year in the second division, the team managed to move up to the first Turkish football league. The team's coach at the time was Fenerbahçe legend Lefter Küçükandonyadis .
The greatest success in the club's history so far was participation in the final of the Turkish Cup in 1983 . Back then they lost the first leg 2-0 and the second leg 2-1 to Fenerbahçe Istanbul. Since Fenerbahçe was already automatically qualified as champion of the first division, MİY secured a place in the European Cup Winners' Cup as a participant in the cup final . There you met the Bulgarian first division club PFC Spartak Warna . While the first leg in Mersin ended 0-0, the second leg in Bulgaria lost 1-0 and was eliminated.
The 2010/11 season ended Mersin İdman Yurdu with the 1st place in the Bank Asya 1st Lig and thus rose again after 28 years of abstinence in the top Turkish league Spor Toto Süper Lig . It was not until the 2008/09 season that Mersin İdman Yurdu was promoted from the third-highest division "TFF 2. Lig" to the TFF 1. Lig .
After the club in the third division season was already established weeks before the end of the season as the first relegated, he had in the summer of 2018 directive of the FIFA addition to the regular descent still relegated another league. Stadion
The club played its games in the Tevfik-Sırrı-Gür Stadium from 1951 to March 2013 . A "classic" football stadium, where the field is surrounded by a running track and can thus be used for athletics competitions. This stadium has been renovated several times and, after its last in the 2011/12 season, had a seating capacity of 10,128.
As part of the 2013 Mediterranean Games , which were held in the city of Mersin, the Mersin Arena was built as a highly modern and pure football stadium . While the stadium was designed so that several sports could be played in it during the Mediterranean Games, the stadium was then converted into a pure football stadium and handed over to Mersin İdman Yurdu as a new venue in March 2014. The stadium meets all UEFA standards and has a seating capacity of 25,534. The opening game was the league encounter on March 23, 2014 against Gaziantep Büyükşehir Belediyespor .
