Mehmet Şahan (born January 1, 1958 in Kilis ) is a former Turkish football player and current coach.

Player career

Şahan started professional football in the lower Turkish leagues and moved to the second division side Gaziantepspor in the 1970s . With this club he reached in the season 1978/79 for the first time in the club's history the championship of the second highest Turkish league (today's TFF 1st Lig ) and thus direct promotion to the Süper Lig . In the Süper-Lig he lost his regular place and only came as a supplementary player sporadically.

At the end of the 1979/80 season he issued Gaziantepspor and moved to the second division Düzcespor and played here two seasons.

He then played for various clubs in the lower Turkish professional leagues until he moved to the team in his hometown, to the third division club Kilisspor . He played here until the summer of 1991 and then ended his active professional football career here.

As a coaching career

After being persuaded by his former team-mate Sakıp Özberk , he switched to coaching after his playing career and his first job was in 1991 as a youth coach at Gaziantepspor .

After two years in this position, he was promoted to assistant coach in 1993 and assisted his mentor Sakıp Özberk for two years .

In the summer of 1994 he worked as head coach for the first time and looked after his hometown club Kilisspor for a season . After this season he returned to Gaziantepspor and worked there for three years as a youth or assistant coach.

In the following he coached various teams of the lower Turkish professional leagues, mainly from the Southeast Anatolia region .

At the end of April 2012 he took over the relegation-threatened club Gaziantep Büyükşehir Belediyespor and confidently secured relegation with him. After a 4-1 home defeat against Çaykur Rizespor on matchday 18 , Şahan announced his resignation. Two days after his resignation, Vedat Özsoylu was introduced as Şahan's successor .
