Mehmet Sakıp Özberk (born May 1, 1945 in Gaziantep ) is a former Turkish football player and coach. Through his many years of activity as a player and above all as a coach for Gaziantepspor , he is very strongly associated with this club. Together with club president Celal Doğan , Özberk is credited with leading the club from an average club to an institution in Turkish football.

Player career

Özberk started club football in the youth of Gaziantep Mekikspor . He later played for the amateur club Reyhanlıspor . After he had been active for this club in the summer of 1966, he moved to the first division and capital club MKE Ankaragücü . Here he did not get beyond the role of a supplementary player in his first season. In his second season for Ankaragücü he won a regular place in phases. In the summer of 1968 his club missed relegation and played in the Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi in the coming season . Here Özberk and his club managed to get promoted back to the 1st league . Özberk completed 17 of the possible 34 league games for his team in this second division season. After promotion, Özberk stayed three more seasons with Ankaragücü, but still did not get beyond the role of a supplementary player. In the 1971/72 season, Özberk's team surprisingly won the Turkish Cup . Özberk contributed two goals in four cup games to this success.

In the summer of 1972 Özberk moved to the second division club Adana Demirspor . At this club he immediately established himself as a regular player. The team ended the season as champions of the 2nd division and thus achieved promotion to the 1st division. After promotion, he played two more years in the first division for Demirspor. In the summer of 1976 he moved to the club in his hometown, the second division club Gaziantepspor . He played for this club for an indefinite period.

Coaching career

The beginnings of Özberk's coaching career are not well documented. It is documented, among other things, that he worked for the Turkish Football Association in 1985 as a screening and development trainer and in this role was responsible for the area of Southeast Anatolia . Presumably he worked as head coach for the second division side Siirt Köy Hizmetleri SK for the first time in the summer of 1987 . Two years later he coached the second division team Petrol Ofisi SK .

In the summer of 1991 he took over his former club Gaziantepspor as head coach for the first time . He coached this club for one season. After he had reached relegation at the end of the season on the last day of the game, he separated from this club. In November 1992 he took over another ex-club with the second division side Adana Demirspor . After just six weeks he left this club again. In January of the next year he took over the Istanbul second division club Zeytinburnuspor . He led this club to the championship of the second division season 1992/93 and thus to direct promotion to the first league . After this success, the club extended Özberk's contract for another season. With the club Özberk slipped in the spring of 1994 in the defense region of the first division table. So Özberk left the club in March 1994.

In the summer of 1994 Özberk took over Gaziantepspor for the second time. This time he coached the club for three seasons. In addition to the best positions in the table for 15 years, Özberk Gaziantepspor's position in the first division was strengthened. During this time, he reorganized the club together with club president Celal Doğan and implemented several reforms in the youth department and talent scouting. In addition, he persuaded or encouraged former Gaziantepspor players such as Hüseyin Kalpar and Nurullah Sağlam to choose a career as a coach. These players then also worked at Gaziantepspor as co- and later as head coach and also contributed to the development of the club. Özberk had a love-hate relationship with the club's president Doğan. While Doğan was a member of the Turkish 1968 movement and an avowed social democrat, Özberk was known for his conservative approach to life. This fact led to several controversies between the two befriended personalities and made sure that Özberk left in the summer of 1997. After Özberk's departure, the club was coached by Georges Heylens and Milorad Mitrović for a year and played against relegation during that season. Then Özberk's assistant coach Kalpar took over the team and led the team back to its old strength. Özberk himself trained the clubs Altay Izmir and Bursaspor in the meantime . After Kalpar had to leave in September 1999, Özberk inherited him and coached the club for the third time. With his team he became the surprise team of the 1999/2000 first division season . This ended the team third in the table, achieved the best placement in the club's history and thus qualified for the UEFA Cup. Despite this success Özberk experienced again several controversies with the club president Doğan. As a result, Özberk left the club again in the summer of 2000 and was replaced by Erdoğan Arıca . In the new season, the club then started Arıca, while Özberk himself took over the newly promoted Siirt Jet-Pa Spor . After Arıca was dismissed after the 15th matchday, Doğan again agreed with Özberk for a fourth term at Gaziantepspor. In the 2000/01 season , Özberk's team held a small point deficit to the top of the table until the end of the season and for the first time in the club's history retained the chance of the championship. On the penultimate matchday, Gaziantepspor met Galatasaray Istanbul in their home game . This team was only two points ahead of second place in the table. In the event of a win, Özberk's team would replace Galatasaray in second place in the table and have a great chance of second champion league place. Gaziantepspor lost the hard-fought game. The club finally ended the season in 3rd place in the table and thus repeated the club's record. After this season Özberk left the club for the last time.

He later trained the first and second division teams Denizlispor , Samsunspor , Diyarbakırspor , Konyaspor , MKE Ankaragücü and Çaykur Rizespor in sequence . At this club he did not achieve any noteworthy success apart from relegation. Afterwards, Özberk was still associated with several clubs, but he did not take any more coaching offers due to health problems.
