Kilis ( Arabic كلز Killiz ) is a Turkish city in the region of Southeast Anatolia . It is the provincial capital of the Kilis province of the same nameand also the center ( Merkez ) of the district of the same name. The city lies on the Syrian border in a plain of the same name, at the foot of the Kefiz at about 650 meters above sea level .
The district of the same name consists of the district town (87 percent of the district's population ) and 52 villages ( Köy , plural Köyler ), of which Çukuroba (2,014), Gülbaba (1,395) and Yavuzlu (1,297) are the largest. An average of 295 residents inhabit each of the 52 villages.
history
There are numerous Höyüks in the immediate vicinity of the city , which show that the region has been inhabited for a very long time. The best known and best researched is the Oylum Höyük , which was inhabited from the Neolithic to the Byzantine period.
The name Kilis is used for the first time in Arabic scripts in the 10th century and is derived from the term for "church". At the end of the 11th century Kilis was conquered by the crusaders , later fell into the hands of the Ayyubids and the Egyptian Mamluks . When the region was conquered by the Ottoman Sultan Selim the Strict , Kilis was still a village. From 1519 Kilis was a small town with four mahalles and about 1,500 inhabitants. At the end of the 19th century, Kilis belonged to the Aleppo province and had 20,000 inhabitants. The geographer Vital Cuinet reports, among other things, of 47 Friday mosques , 12 smaller mosques , 4 dervish convents, 24 madrasas and 3 churches.
