Sophronios of Kilis

Sophronios of Kilis ( Middle Greek Σωφρόνιος Βʹ, Εʹ , * in Kilis ; † October 1780 ) was an Orthodox patriarch of Jerusalem and Constantinople.

Life

The son of an 'Īsā from Kilis came from a Christian-Arab family and grew up in an Arab-Turkish environment. In 1732 he learned Greek in Tripoli. From 1733 to 1735 he collected church funds in the area of ​​Adana and Antioch, then stayed in Damascus until 1739 . In 1740 he was ordained a priest in Jerusalem . He was bishop of Acre in 1741 and of Aleppo in 1750 . In 1752 he retired to Constantinople . He turned down the offer of the patriarchal throne of Antioch in 1766. In 1771 he was elected Patriarch of Jerusalem and worked there as Sophronios V until 1774. On December 14, 1774 he was transferred to the chair of the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople and officiated as Sophronios II until 1780. He was buried in the Archangel Arnavutköy Church / Mega Revma .
