Leon Kossak

Leon Kossak (born March 20, 1815 in Nowy Wiśnicz , † June 18, 1877 in Krakow ) was a Polish officer and painter.

Leon Robert Kossak was the son of an East Galician landowner and brother of the painter Juliusz Kossak (1824–1899). He studied at the University of Krakow and then joined the Austrian army. During the Hungarian uprising in 1848 Kossak took part in the regiment of the Polish Uhlans in the battle of Világos .

In 1863 he took part as a captain in the January uprising and was captured by the Russians . He came to Siberia for eight years and then settled in Krakow. As an autodidact , Kossak drew and painted pictures from the military environment.
