Mehmet Levent Arıkdoğan (born August 23, 1953 in Mersin ) is a former Turkish football player and current coach .
Player career
Arıkdoğan began his professional career in the summer of 1969 with the first division club Mersin İdman Yurdu , the most famous club in his hometown Mersin. In the club, which was managed and financially supported by the industrialist Mehmet Emin Karamehmet at the time , he was not used in competitive matches for two to three years due to the strong squad. Only during the 1972/73 season found Arıkdoğan in the squad planning attention and made his professional debut in the first division game on November 12, 1972 against Goztepe Izmir . After the patron Karamehmet had given up his activities at the club in 1974, the club got into difficulties due to the lack of financial resources and rose as the table penultimate in the Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi , in the second highest Turkish division. Arıkdoğan stayed in the team after relegation and quickly fought for a regular place. With his club he reached the championship at the end of the second division season 1975/76 and thus the return to the first league .
Despite promotion to the 1st Lig Arıkdoğan was given to the second division club İskenderunspor for the 1976/77 season . For this club he played the next five seasons and returned in the summer of 1981 to Mersin İY, who was now playing in the 2nd Lig. In his first season after returning, the 1981/82 season , he and his team were again second division champions and thus rose to the first league. Returning to this league, the club played against relegation again for most of the season, at the same time caused a surprise in the Turkish Cup . In the Cup of the 1982/83 season , the club reached the final as a relegation candidate and met Fenerbahçe Istanbul here . The final was lost 2-0, but reaching the final was one of the greatest successes in the club's history in general and the best placement in this competition in particular. Arıkdoğan completed almost all league and cup games of his club this season and was thus significantly involved in this success. The club rose due to the direct comparison with Antalyaspor , which had the same point and the same goal difference, in the 2nd Lig. Despite the relegation, Arıkdoğan played by participating in the final as a second division in the European Cup Winners' Cup . Here the team failed against the Bulgarian first division side PFC Spartak Warna . In the league, the runner-up was achieved and thus the direct return to the 1st Lig missed. Arıkdoğan played for Mersin İY until the summer of 1989 and then ended his career.
Coaching career
Arıkdoğan began his coaching career in 1990 with a head coach for third division club Tarsus İdman Yurdu . He led this club at the end of the season to the third division championship and thus to return to the second league. Despite this promotion, he worked as an assistant coach for the next two years.
After he had supervised the third division Gönenspor as head coach for the 1993/94 season , he worked as an assistant coach for Mersin İdman Yurdu from the summer of 1994 and then as the head coach from the summer of 1995. Later he worked for various clubs in the lower Turkish leagues.
In summer 2016 he was hired for the fourth time in his career as head coach at Mersin İdman Yurdu and was dismissed in October 2016.
