Körfez Iskenderunspor is a Turkish football club from the district town of Iskenderun of Hatay province . The blue-reds play their home games at İskenderun 5 Temmuz Stadı . The club was still called İskenderun Demir Çelikspor until the summer of 2014 and then took on the current name.
history
The association was founded in 1991 as a works association of the İskenderun- based steel and iron union. In 1995 the club made it into what was then the lowest professional league in Turkey, today's TFF 2nd Lig . After nine years of playing in this league, they spent the 2004/05 season in the fourth-class TFF 3rd Lig , but rose again at the end of the season.
In addition to football, the sports club also has other departments and bears the official club name İskenderun Demir Çelikspor Kulübü . Other common names are İskenderun DÇ and İskenderun DÇ Spor . The team's nickname is Kızıl Körfez (German: Red Golf ) and is a reference to the Gulf of İskenderun and the club color red, which covers a large part of the jerseys.
Name change
In March 2014, a general meeting decided to rename the association Körfez İskenderunspor . The reason for the name change was that the name change was intended to meet the wishes of the city's population who wanted to have a successor club to the historical club İskenderunspor . The new name was deliberately chosen to evoke an association with the historical İskenderunspor and to enable a later name change to İskenderunspor . In July 2014, the Turkish Football Association approved the name change. It remained unclear whether only the football division was renamed from İskenderun Demir Çelikspor to Körfez İskenderunspor , or the entire sports club.
In the third division 2014/15 season , the team missed the relegation of the TFF 2nd Lig and was relegated to the TFF 3rd Lig. Relegated to this league, the club also missed relegation here and thus rose to the amateur league after 21 years.
