Rıza Çalımbay (born February 2, 1963 in Sivas , Turkey ) is a former Turkish football player and coach. Through his many years of work for Beşiktaş Istanbul and as a home-grown man, he is very strongly associated with this club. Fan and club members regard him as one of the most important players in club history. He holds several club records. With 494 first division appearances for Beşiktaş, he is by far the player with the most Süper Lig appearances in the club's history. After the departure of the Beşiktaş legend Samet Aybaba in the summer of 1988, he took over the captain's armband and wore it until the end of his career. Because of his combative and tireless style of play and because of his height, he was nicknamed Atom Karınca ( A-Tom Ant ) by fans , borrowed from a well-known cartoon character.
Player career
Çalımbay was a classic right-winger at Beşiktaş Istanbul for 16 years and wrote history as their captain, nicknamed the Atomic Ant, together with the soccer trio Ali Validiken , Metin Tekin and Feyyaz Uçar .
At the end of the 1995/96 season he announced the end of his career. With a scheduled farewell game between Beşiktaş and the Croatian club NK Varaždin on July 21, 1996 , he said goodbye to active football.
Coaching career
After finishing his active career, Calimbay worked as a coach at Caykur Rizespor . A clause of his contract brought in out of love for his home club allowed him to move to Beşiktaş Istanbul on January 27, 2005, and thus to succeed Vicente del Bosque in the current season.
Since October 2010 he has been the coach of his home club and Süper Lig club Sivasspor . At the end of the season he left Sivasspor with the end of his contract.
A few weeks after leaving Sivasspor, he took over the first division newcomer Çaykur Rizespor for the third time . With Rizespor he had a successful start to the season and moved up with his team to 2nd place in the table after the 6th matchday. This was followed by a long series of defeats, so that the team finished the first half of the season on the 15th and penultimate place in the table. After this negative trend could not be averted in the first game days of the second half of the season and the club had slipped to a relegation zone, Çalımbay resigned after the 20th match day from his office.
At the beginning of June 2014 he was introduced as the new head coach at the newly promoted Mersin İdman Yurdu . He signed a one-year contract with an option for an additional year. He led the financially troubled club, which the Turkish specialist press traded as a sure relegation candidate, to 7th place in the table and thus repeated the second-best first division placement in the club's history. After the club was given a one-year transfer ban by FIFA in the summer of 2015 , Çalımbay made his contract extension dependent on the club keeping all the players he named in the squad. Since the club's management did not comply with this request, Çalımbay announced his resignation in mid-June 2015.
In July 2015, Çalımbay was introduced as the new head coach of the first division side Kasımpaşa Istanbul . On September 13, 2016, the Çalımbay contract was terminated by mutual agreement. After three matchdays, he was with his team on the last place in the table in the Süper Lig . Before that, there were differences of opinion between him and the club's management because the club decided to budget restrictions in the summer of 2016 and insufficiently replaced high performers such as Eren Derdiyok , Andreas Isaksson and Oscar Scarione from Çalımbay's point of view.
At the beginning of October 2016, Çalımbay took over the first division team Antalyaspor and a year later, in mid-October 2017, Trabzonspor . At the Black Sea Club, after a change in the board in summer 2018, he did not receive a contract extension. For the following season 2018/19 he then took over the Central Anatolian club Konyaspor . Here he resigned from his position three months later after disagreements.
In the summer of 2019 he took over the club of his home provice Sivas for the second time in his coaching career with Sivasspor.
