Eskişehirspor is a sports club from the Turkish city of Eskişehir in the central Anatolian province of the same name . The association was founded in 1965. Since its inception, he has played a total of 30 seasons with interruptions in the Süper Lig , the highest Turkish league. In the all-time table of this league , he is 10th. The club has the club colors red and black, the team is nicknamed Kırmızı Şimşekler , the red lightning bolts.
He had his most successful time in the 1960s and 1970s, in which the club played several times for the Turkish Championship until the end of the season and only missed it in the last few game days. Raised to the Süper Lig, the club achieved the greatest success in club history with the Turkish runner-up in the 1968/69 season . Up to this season, the three big Istanbul clubs Beşiktaş , Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray decided the Turkish championship and the runner-up among themselves. This success was so far the greatest of an Anatolian team in Turkish football and therefore formative for it. After this success, the Turkish runner-up followed two more times in this period, one time 3rd place in the table and once 4th place in the table. In addition, successes in the Turkish Cup , the President's Cup and the Prime Minister's Cup were added during this period . These successes made the club a feared opponent of the three big Istanbul clubs.
After a break of more than twenty years, the club experienced a brief period of success again in the first half of the 2010s with fifth place in the table and a participation in the cup final. Eskişehirspor is known for its euphoric fans, led by "Amigo Orhan".
founding
On June 10, 1965, the teams İdman Yurdu, Akademi Gençlik and Yıldıztepe merged to Eskişehirspor. Previously, these teams held a local championship in which other clubs from the area participated. This gave the team the right to play in the 2nd Turkish Football League.

Heyday and participation in the European Cup (1965–1981)
The club managed direct promotion to the first division in the first year. Since the Turkish league was founded in 1959, only eight teams from Istanbul and four clubs each from Ankara and Izmir have played there . Adana Demirspor was the only provincial club, but played its games in Ankara. In 1971, the club managed to win the Turkish Cup by defeating arch-rivals Bursaspor 2-0 after a 1-0 defeat in the second leg. In the 1970s, good league placements were achieved and the championship narrowly missed. These years were the only European Cup appearances of the team. From the 1975/76 season it was no longer enough for the upper ranks.
(1981-1988)
In 1982, 16 years after promotion, the club made acquaintance with the 2nd division again and played here for two years. With the later rise again a success was recorded, but one could no longer build on the glorious 1970s. In the 1986/87 season they were in the final of the Turkish Cup and hoped after a 2-1 victory in the first leg against Gençlerbirliği Ankara for the second cup win in the club's history, but the away game ended with a 0-5 defeat.
"Forced relegation" and decline (1988–2005)
Eskişehirspor was in the 1988/89 season in the relegation battle and ended this in 15th place in the table and just secured himself to remain in the first division. But a tragic incident occurred on matchday 18. Samsunspor was unable to continue the season after an accident with the team bus on the way to the away game in Malatya . Three players and the coach were killed and many players were seriously injured. The remaining games until the end of the season were initially rated 0: 2 against Samsunspor. The Turkish Football Association Türkiye Futbol Federasyonu (TFF) decided, however, that Samsunspor will remain first class in the following year and that the first team will be relegated above the relegation ranks. As fifteenth in the table, this was Eskişehirspor. The bitter aftertaste of this decision was the relegation of Samsunspor in the following season. Eskişehirspor made it back to the first division after five years of abstinence in 1995, but because of a failed transfer policy, the direct relegation followed. Additional financial difficulties brought the club into a crisis. In 1999 it was still possible to prevent the fall into the third division, but the restructuring of the Turkish league system in 2003 made this step inevitable.
The return (from 2005)
With President Nebi Hatipoglu, the club was able to attract good players to the club despite the 3rd division. In the penalty shootout of the play-off round they rose as the third team (2005/06). In the 2006/07 season, the club occupied 13th place in the table in the 2nd Turkish league. After a rapid start to the season, Eskişehirspor suddenly found themselves in a relegation battle four game days before the end of the season.
In the 2007/08 season, the club wanted to make transfers such as B. Sergen Yalçın and Coşkun Birdal back to the House of Lords. Until the middle of the second half of the season, they always ranked in the first two places (direct promotion), but after poor performance in the final phase of the season, the club still took fourth place in the table and was therefore eligible for participation in the playoff games (3 . – 6th place). On May 16, 2008, the semifinals against table fifth Diyarbakırspor took place in İnönü Stadium in Istanbul. Eskişehirspor made it into the final after a 6: 5 n. E. (0: 0). Here they defeated Boluspor on May 18, 2008 (6th place; victorious in the semifinals against Sakaryaspor ) 2-0 and rose as the third team to the Süper Lig .
Süper Lig (from 2008)
Eskişehirspor played in the 2008/09 season for the first time in 12 years in the Süper Lig . Relegation was secured two game days before the end of the season and they finished eleventh in the table. In the 2009/10 season, the club narrowly missed the Euroleague places. The 7th place in the table is still to be seen as a success.
The 2010/11 season was planned with the aim of making it into the top five of the Süper Lig. Players like Rodrigo Tello , Batuhan Karadeniz , Erkan Zengin and Péle were hired to achieve this goal. But after only one point from the first six games they were in 17th place in the table and coach Rıza Çalımbay was fired. With Bülent Uygun came a winning streak and the season ended again in seventh place.
The 2011/12 season began with a major delay due to the bribery / manipulation scandal in the Turkish Süper Lig last year. Officials, board members as well as players and coaches from various clubs were involved. After Bülent Uygun ended up in custody, the club decided to separate from him. A punishment from the TFF has not yet taken place.
On July 17, 2011, a three-year contract was agreed with Michael Skibbe, whose first official act was the transfer of the ex-Dortmund Dedê . The team played very successfully and finished third in the first half of the table. In the first half of the season Skibbe scored 30 points in 17 games and led the team to fourth place in the table. Eskisehirspor was named Team of the Year, and Dedê, one of the team's players, was named the first half of the season. Skibbe - like many players and employees - was not paid by the club for months because there was obviously no financial basis. He decided to turn on FIFA, sue the club and leave it. He was succeeded by Ersun Yanal . With him they reached the semi-finals of the Turkish Cup and managed with fifth place in the Süper Lig to participate in the playoffs of the 2012/13 UEFA Europa League . These were less successful and qualification for a European competition was missed.
After 37 years in Europe
For the 2012/13 season, for the first time in over 37 years, they had the chance to participate in the European Cup, the UEFA Europa League . UEFA excluded the Turkish club Beşiktaş Istanbul from participating in the Europa League for disregarding the UEFA regulations . Bursaspor took its place. Eskişehirspor first won against FC St. Johnstone before the club was eliminated by Olympique Marseille .
Coat of arms and club colors
The template for the coat of arms was made by Aziz Bolel , who was on the board in the year it was founded. ES is the short name of EskişehirSpor. The club is often referred to as ESES in the media. The three stars symbolize the three associations (İdman Yurdu, Akademi Gençlik and Yıldıztepe) from which Eskişehirspor emerged in 1965. The club colors are red and black. There are, however, two different versions of how this came about. In honor of a board member of Gençlerbirliği Ankara , who is said to have played a role in the founding of Eskişehirspor, these colors were selected.
A more unlikely version is that the founding members wanted to use the colors of success. So they chose the colors of Stade Rennes . This club was in the founding year (1965) of Eskişehirspor French cup winners.
Over the years, Eskişehirspor's players have been nicknamed "Kırmızı Şimşekler" (The Red Lightning).
Fans
The fans of "ESES" have been known in Turkey since the successful 1970s. "Amigo Orhan" was the legendary whip. Before each home game, he took his place in the center circle and started the fan chants. After the ban on entering the field of play, his place was the opposite stand. With him they also organized the first grandstand show in Turkey. In 1987 Eskişehirspor fans, 12,000 in number, traveled to Istanbul's Ali Sami Yen Stadium . The stadium, which had a capacity of 30,000 at the time, recorded its historic high with 39,000 spectators.
Despite the team's crash into the third division, a large part of the fans remained loyal to the club. An average audience of 10,000 was not unusual. 27,000 fans traveled to the play-off final in Ankara in 2005/06 and then celebrated promotion to the TFF 1st Lig with the team. 16,000 were present at the 2007/08 promotion match against Boluspor in the İnönü Stadium the tickets were limited to this number.
The bond with the club is so great that fans of the Istanbul clubs cannot celebrate their championships on the streets in Eskişehir, as this is prevented by the fans of ESES. In 2005 a “Fenerium” (sales point for Fenerbahçe fan merchandise) had to be closed due to major protests.
There are several fan clubs. The largest are Kızılcıklı , Nefer, and Altes . Motivated by the rise in 2008, two more groups emerged: KoreoESES and BandoESES . The first-named group organizes choreos, large fan flags and is involved in aid campaigns for schools in the city and the surrounding villages. BandoESES is a group of almost 40 people. These support the chants with instruments such as drums, trumpets and other wind instruments. Recently, the groups have been trying to organize themselves as a large unit under the name ETB (Eskişehirspor Taraftar Birliği - Eskişehirspor fan community).
Stages
Eskişehirspor played his home games at Eskişehir Ataturk Stadı until 2016 . Like many football stadiums in Turkey, the stadium in Eskişehir is named after the founder of the Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk . After renovation work in 2005, the stadium consists exclusively of seats and offers space for 18,608 football fans. The main stand ("Kapalı") is covered, but smaller than the back straight ("Açık"). There is no grandstand behind the gates. Due to the age, the capacity, the lack of roofing on the back straight and the lack of stands behind the goals, the stadium is rather unsuitable for the Turkcell Süper Lig and in no way meets the UEFA criteria . On May 14, 2016, the last league game took place in Eskişehir Ataturk Stadı. The relegation-threatened Eskişehirspor lost 2-1 against Istanbul Başakşehir . Out of frustration with the result, fans set parts of the stadium on fire. The stadium will be demolished at the end of the season.
With the official candidacy of the TFF to host the European Football Championship in 2016 , the city of Eskişehir was named as one of the eight likely venues and the creation of a modern football arena with around 38,000 seats was planned. Despite the tournament being held in France, the new building project was implemented. In the 2016/17 season, the club moved to the new Eskişehir Yeni Ataturk Stadı with around 34,930 seats.
