Championship decision
Beşiktaş Istanbul was champion of the 2008/09 season . The season did not start optimally for the black and white . On the 6th matchday, Ertuğrul Sağlam resigned from his position as head coach at Beşiktaş. His successor was Mustafa Denizli , Denizli succeeded as the first coach in Turkish football to train all three major clubs from Istanbul . The first half of the season was finished in 6th place, which is why winning the title was out of the question for the time being. In the second half of the season Beşiktaş made a sensational race to catch up. You only lost one game and scored 40 points. A few weeks earlier, Beşiktaş Istanbul won the Turkish Cup. The championship won was a special title for Mustafa Denizli. He was the first coach in the history of the Turkcell Süper Lig to be Turkish champions with Beşiktaş, Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray.
Sivasspor confirmed his good performance from the previous year and finished the season as runner-up for the first time in the club's history. Sivasspor led the table with 17 matchdays the most in the league, but they lost many important points in the final spurt of the season and thus the chance to become champions as the second team outside of Istanbul.
Trabzonspor played the 2008/09 season with a completely new squad. After Sivasspor, the Black Sea team was the most frequently league leader. Even so, the performance was not consistent enough. On the last day of the match Trabzonspor missed the leap to 2nd place and thus the Champions League qualification, they lost against Fenerbahçe with 1: 2.
The 2008-09 season was a disappointment for Fenerbahçe Istanbul . Before the season, the record champions signed the new European champion Luis Aragonés and the Spanish top scorer Daniel Güiza . As in the previous year, the season ended without a title. A consolation was the final participation in the Turkish Cup. At the end of the season it was announced that Fenerbahçe Aragonés will be fired and Christoph Daum will be brought back to the Bosphorus .
At Galatasaray Istanbul , expectations for the 2008/09 season were high. The red and yellow wanted to defend their title and signed well-known players such as Fernando Meira , Harry Kewell and Milan Baros . The team was trained by Michael Skibbe . Skibbe was sacked in February 2009 after a 2-5 loss to Kocaelispor at home. His successor was the former Galatasaray player Bülent Korkmaz . Under Korkmaz it didn't get better and they finished the season in fifth place.
midfield
Bursaspor played a good season, in the second half of the season they were the second best team behind Beşiktaş Istanbul with 33 points and they played for participation in the UEFA Europa League until the last matchday. Kayserispor did not play the attacking football as they did the previous season. Therefore, Kayserispor had the fewest goals conceded throughout the season. Gaziantepspor and Istanbul BB had a mixed season.
Relegation battle
Up to the 32nd matchday eight teams could fall into the second division. Ankaraspor was surprisingly one of the championship candidates in the first half of the season. They were level on points with Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray in 4th place and initially had the goal of qualifying for a European Cup place. However, the second half of the season was a disaster for the capital club. With eight points, Aykut Kocaman's team was the worst in the second half of the season, only through the good first half of the season did the team secure relegation. On matchday 31, the first two relegated teams were determined: Kocaelispor and Hacettepespor . Hacettepespor's descent was a matter of time for many. The team played bad football all season. Kocaelispor went back to Bank Asya 1. Lig after just one year . The highlight of the season for Kocaelispor was the 5-2 away win against Galatasaray Istanbul. On matchday 34, Gençlerbirliği Ankara , Antalyaspor and Konyaspor were looking to stay in the Turkcell Süper Lig. Konyaspor had to go to Turkey despite a win against Ankaraspor (3-0) and a defeat by Gençlerbirliği Ankara (0-4, against Kayserispor) 2nd league. In a direct comparison between Gençlerbirliği, Denizlispor and Konyaspor, the record was against Konyaspor.
