Rüştü Reçber (born May 10, 1973 in Antalya ) is a former Turkish football goalkeeper who was under contract with Beşiktaş Istanbul until 2012 .
Career
Club career
Rüştü started his career at Antalyaspor . In 1994 he moved to the traditional Turkish club Fenerbahçe Istanbul . After nine successful years he went to Spain for FC Barcelona , where coach Frank Rijkaard rarely or hardly ever used him. In the summer of 2004 he returned to Fenerbahçe on loan.
In the 2005/06 season Rüştü lost his regular place at Fenerbahçe Istanbul and in the Turkish national team to Volkan Demirel due to an injury .
For the 2007/08 season he moved (together with his teammate Mehmet Yozgatlı ) from Fenerbahçe Istanbul to league rivals Beşiktaş Istanbul and received a three-year contract there. Although intended as an experienced goalkeeper, he had to give up his place between the posts to the younger substitute goalkeeper Hakan Arıkan , especially due to injury .
National team
Rüştü was a regular goalkeeper in the national team from 1995 and has played 120 international matches. He is most capped player of Turkey . In 1996 Turkey took part in a European football championship for the first time - Rüştü was in goal in all three games of the team, but the team had to return home after the preliminary round. At the Football World Cup in 2002 - the Turks' first World Cup participation since 1954 and their second ever - he finished third with the Turkish national team , was elected the second best goalkeeper of the tournament and was appointed to the World Cup All-Star Team. He also came in third place in the election for World Goalkeeper of the Year 2002. Until 2008 Turkey failed to qualify for a major tournament. At the European Championships in 2008 , however, Rüştü was once again part of the team's squad, but was not used in the preliminary round. Only in the quarter-finals against Croatia was Rüştü on the starting line-up, due to the red ban of his goalkeeper colleague Volkan . After the Croatians took the lead in the 119th minute, he hit the ball in the 122nd minute with a free kick from his own half into the opponent's penalty area, preparing Turkey to equalize. In addition, he saved the decisive penalty from Mladen Petrić and thus ensured the semi-finals of Turkey. In the semifinals, the Turkish team lost 3-2 against Germany , Rüştü played a major role in this due to mistakes made. Rüştü, who was allowed to wear the Turkish team's armband one last time due to an injury to Nihat , announced his resignation from the national team. Despite this resignation, he was nominated again for the World Cup qualifier against Spain, in which he sat on the bench. Then he decided to continue. When Fatih Terim announced after failing to qualify for the 2010 World Cup that he would resign as coach of the national team, Rüştü also announced his resignation from the national team.
The goalkeeper celebrated his departure from the national team on May 27, 2012 in a friendly against Finland. Rüştü completed his 120th international match.

Rüştü Reçber was the team manager of the Turkish national soccer team from August 2013 to February 2014 . After his dismissal, he was expert at Pay TV transmitter Lig TV . In March 2020, Rüştü Reçber tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus and went into quarantine .
