Volkan Demirel (born October 27, 1981 in Istanbul ) is a former Turkish soccer goalkeeper and today's coach .
Career
society
In 2000 Demirel began his professional career with the second division club Kartalspor and completed more than 50 missions there in two years. In 2002 he accepted an offer from Fenerbahçe Istanbul and signed a two-year deal. During the 2002/03 season he came as a substitute for Rüştü Reçber, but only for one use. After Reçber's move to FC Barcelona before the 2003/04 season, Demirel broke his nose. After his return he was initially only a substitute for Recep Biler . In December 2003 he got his chance again and established himself as number one with strong performances. After 19 season appearances, Demirel won the championship title with Fenerbahçe. At the end of the season, his contract was extended by three years. At the end of the 2018/19 season his contract was not renewed and Demirel ended his career as an active professional and has been on Fenerbahce's coaching staff ever since.
National team
After performing well in the Fenerbahçe Istanbul shirt, Demirel made his senior national team debut on April 28, 2004 when he came on as a substitute in the friendly against Belgium . He was nominated for the Euro 2008 as a regular goalkeeper. At the European Championships he played three games in the preliminary round, where he saw the red card in the last group game against the Czech Republic for assaulting striker Jan Koller and was suspended for two games. After Rüştü Reçber's resignation from the national team, Demirel became Turkey's regular goalkeeper. After a public dispute in the derby between Fenerbahce and Galatasaray (on May 12, 2013 in the Şükrü Saraçoglu Stadium) with the international Sabri Sarıoğlu , who was substituted in in the Istanbul derby, both players were expelled from the TFF and their national coach Abdullah Avcı . Then goalkeepers Cenk Gönen , Sinan Bolat and Mert Günok took over his role. In the meantime, he was again the first goalkeeper to play for Turkey's 2014 World Cup qualifiers.
Coaching career
Assistant coach
Demirel has been part of the Fenerbahce coaching staff with coach Ersun Yanal since the 2019/2020 season.
Controversies about grossly unsportsmanlike conduct
February 2013: Insult and threat to Yalçın Ayhan
In the Turkish league game on February 24, 2013 between Fenerbahçe Istanbul and Kasımpaşa Istanbul , there was a controversy between Demirel and opponent Yalçın Ayhan . This controversy continued after the final whistle on the way from the dressing room to the team bus. Demirel is said to have stopped Ayhan at the team bus and insulted him first. He is then said to have threatened Ayhan to have him picked up from his home. Demirel dismissed these accusations as lies and said that he only wanted to ask Ayhan if he had insulted Demirel's mother and if so, that he should say this insult to his face. The incident went to court demanding that Demirel be sentenced to four years and four months in prison.
August 2014: Assault on Felipe Melo
In the Turkish Supercup game on August 25, 2014 against arch rivals Galatasaray Istanbul , Demirel drew attention to himself with gross unsportsmanlike conduct and sparked a long discussion in the specialist press. The game ended 0-0 after extra time and had to be decided by penalty shoot-out. First Demirel grabbed his water bottle before every penalty shot by the opponent and thus delayed every penalty shot by the opponent. With the opponent's third penalty, which the Brazilian Felipe Melo took and missed, Demirel ran directly towards Melo in a riot of joy and jumped at Melo. Then Demirel tried to physically attack Melo and was stopped by the referee. Both players saw a yellow card after this scene. Immediately after the game, Demirel was approached by the club's own TV broadcaster Fener TV about the scene with Melo and commented on it with the words: “Belediye gereksiz sokak köpeklerini zehirlesin. Yoksa olmayacak, bana kalacak bu iş. Ben de ceza alırım diye korkuyorum. "(German:" The city administration should poison the unnecessary street dogs. Otherwise an unacceptable condition will arise and I have to take on this matter. And then I would be afraid of receiving a punishment. "). He was referring to the nickname Melos, who describes himself as a pit bull . After Demirel was harshly and unanimously criticized for this behavior by the trade press, he was asked what he meant by his statement. He replied: “(...) Ben nereye ne söylediğini çok iyi bilen biriyim. Ne kadar ağır şeyler yaşadığımı bir ben bilirim. Tek bir kişi, tek bir amaç ve tek bir niyettir benimki. Başka yerlere çekilmesin. Ne sokak köpeklerini kastettim, ne de başka bir şeyi ... "(German:" (...) I am someone who knows exactly what he is saying and to whom he is addressing it. Only I know what kind of difficult circumstances I am My intention was directed to a single person, a single goal and had a single intention. Therefore, no reinterpretations should be made. I did not mean the street dogs with my statement, or anything else ... "). With this statement, he confirmed that his statement was addressed to Melo.
After these developments, Galatasaray sued Demirel at the Turkish Football Association . The federation's disciplinary committee gave Demirel a three-game suspension and a fine of 17,500 Turkish lira after three days . Fenerbahçe immediately filed a petition for appeal at the association's arbitration tribunal. However, this was rejected and the sentences imposed were confirmed. In addition to Demirel, the Fenerbahçe club official İlhan Ekşioğlu was sentenced to 30 days' imprisonment and a fine of 26,000 Turkish lira. Fenerbahçe announced in a press release that they were aware of the lynching campaign against Demirel.
In the same game, during the penalty shoot-out, it became apparent that Demirel grabbed his genitals on the sidelines with every penalty converted by Fenerbahçes and pointed them demonstratively in the direction of the Galatasaray players. He defended himself by saying that it was a natural movement and that he could scratch himself where he wanted to.
November 2014: Unsportsmanlike conduct towards Demba Ba
In the league game on November 2, 2014 against arch rivals Beşiktaş Istanbul , the opposing team's striker Demba Ba was dragged roughly to the ground by Demirel's teammate Mehmet Topal in the five-meter space in front of the Fenerbahçe goal. Immediately after this action, Topal asked Ba, who was lying on the floor, "Are you okay?" Thereupon Demirel interfered in the dialogue with the words: “Ya bırak ya, sikeyim okeyini” (meaning “Let it go, we can do without his okay”). This conversation was clearly audible on the TV broadcast and was heavily criticized.
November 2014: Unsportsmanlike conduct by Turkish football fans
On November 16, there was an international match (Turkey versus Kazakhstan) for qualifying for the 2016 European Football Championship . During the warm-up, Demirel was insulted and whistled by spectators for half an hour. Galatasaray Istanbul supporters carried out their feud with the goalkeeper of city rivals Fenerbahçe Istanbul in their stadium . Demirel left the field and left the stadium.
