Mladen Petrić [ ˈmladɛn ˈpɛːtritɕ ] (born January 1, 1981 in Brčko , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a former Croatian football player who also has Swiss nationality .
Career
society
Petrić's professional career began at FC Baden , for whom he had already played in his youth. He had previously trained in Neuenhof ( AG ), where he also grew up. For the 1999/2000 season he moved to Grasshopper Club Zurich , with whom he won the Swiss championship in 2001 and 2003 . From the 2004/05 season Petrić played at FC Basel and was champion here in 2005. In May 2007 he also won the Swiss Cup with FC Basel in Bern. Despite a protracted ankle injury, the 2006/07 season is considered the best of his career: He was the Swiss top scorer with 19 goals in 25 league games and was voted the best player of the season. He also saved a penalty in the second minute of stoppage time in the UEFA Cup match against AS Nancy with a 2-2 score when he acted as goalkeeper for the final seconds of the game after a red card against goalkeeper Franco Costanzo .
For the 2007/08 season he moved to the German Bundesliga for Borussia Dortmund ; The Grasshopper Club Zurich also participated in the transfer fee , which had secured a portion of the transfer fee for resale when Petrić moved to Basel. With BVB he reached the DFB Cup final against FC Bayern Munich in his first season , in which he scored the interim 1-1 equalizer in stoppage time in the second half of the game. Borussia Dortmund lost the game 1: 2 after extra time.
Immediately at the beginning of the 2008/09 season, Petrić moved within the Bundesliga to Hamburger SV . In return, Mohamed Zidan moved to BVB. In Hamburg Petrić became a regular player and service provider. In 2009 and 2010 he reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup and the UEFA Europa League with the team . In the 6-2 win against 1. FC Köln , he scored three goals for the first time in a Bundesliga game.
The contract with Petrić, which expired at the end of the season, was not extended by Hamburger SV. During his time at HSV, he “performed outstandingly” and scored “many goals”, said sports director Frank Arnesen . However, the club wants to "focus more on young players" and "slim down the salary structures" in the future. On the 33rd matchday he was adopted after his last home game and relegation.
For the 2012/13 season, the English first division club FC Fulham Petrić signed with a contract term of over one year. He worked there with trainer Martin Jol , who had previously trained him in Hamburg for a year. Petrić made his debut in the Premier League on August 18, 2012 (1st matchday). With two goals he contributed to the 5-0 home win against Norwich City . Petrić did not extend his expiring contract at his own request.
On September 10, 2013, he signed a contract with West Ham United until the end of the season. Since Petrić had only made three short appearances there and was unable to attract attention for a World Cup nomination , the contract was terminated on December 30, 2013.
On January 9, 2014, Petrić was signed by the Greek club Panathinaikos Athens , where his former Hamburg team-mate Marcus Berg was under contract at the time, until June 30, 2015. For Panathinaikos he scored the decisive goal in the game against Olympiacos Piraeus on February 22, 2015 , after which the national football association canceled the Greek league for an indefinite period due to the massive crowd riots. At the end of the 2015/16 season, he announced the end of his career.
National team
Petrić was active for the Swiss and Croatian U-21 selection and took part for Croatia in the U-21 European Championship 2004 in Germany.
Petrić played his first international match for the Croatian national team in November 2001. He was only shortlisted after Slaven Bilić became national coach in the summer of 2006. With seven goals, he was one of the top goalscorers during the qualifying round for the 2008 European Football Championship . Among other things, he scored the decisive goal to make it 3-2 against England, which meant that the English team did not qualify for the finals.
In March 2013 he was nominated for the last time for the squad of the Croatian national team.
